Wild Things fall to Slammers; late-season fade continues
JOLIET, Ill. – Danny Zardon went 3-for-4 and drove in two runs to lead the Joliet Slammers to a 5-2 victory Sunday afternoon over the fading Wild Things.
Less than 24 hours after being shut out, Washington had eight hits but could push across only two runs against Joliet starter Shane Bryant (5-6) and two relievers.
The loss has Washington (40-37), which has dropped seven of its last 10, to 1½ games out of the final wild-card playoff spot in the Frontier League. Windy City currently holds the last playoff spot and the Wild Things have River City between them and Windy City in the standings.
Zardon had a run-scoring single in the third inning that gave Joliet the lead for good at 2-1. In the fifth, Zardon hit an RBI double and came all the way around to score on the play after the ball was misplayed in the outfield for a two-base error.
Hector Roa, who was the lone Washington player with a multi-hit game, tripled and scored on a single by Kenny Peoples-Walls in the sixth to pull the Wild Things to within 4-2. Washington’s other run scored in the first inning when James Harris led off the game with a single, stole second base and scored on an error.
Trevor Bradley (2-2) gave up two runs on six hits in 3 2/3 innings for Washington.
