Engel’s TD catch caps Canon-McMillan’s comeback
Drew Engel caught a 13-yard touchdown pass from backup quarterback Jon Quinque with 1:59 remaining and Canon-McMillan rallied for a 17-10 road win over Kiski in a nonconference season opener Friday night.
Kiski had taken a 10-9 lead on a two-yard run by Ross Greece and Evan Long’s conversion kick with 10 minutes to play.
After an exchange of punts, C-M took over at the Kiski 40-yard liner with less than five minutes remaining. The Big Macs faced third-and-nine at the Cavaliers’ 13 when Engel hauled in the game-winning touchdown. Quinque, who replaced starter Trey Lewis at quarterback, hooked up with Engel again for a two-point conversion.
Cuyler Rancher then sealed the victory for Canon-McMillan with an interception, one of three in the game by the Big Macs’ defense.
Rancher scored what was C-M’s line touchdown until the final drive. After Long booted a 27-yard field goal to give Kiski a 3-0 lead in the first quarter, Rancher returned the ensuing kickoff 82 yards for a score and 6-3 advantage for the Big Macs.
Josh Byers’ 27-yard field goal gave C-M a 9-3 lead at halftime.
Neither team generated much offense, especially on the ground. Anthony Sacco led the Big Macs with 45 yards on 17 carries but Canon-McMillan was held to seven yards net rushing.
Kiski managed only six rushing yards, though its two quarterbacks combined to completed 13 of 29 passes for 218 yards.
