Small college roundup: W&J stays perfect with win over Westminster
The Washington & Jefferson College women’s basketball team outscored Westminster 20-8 in the first quarter and went on to defeat the Titans 63-50 in a Presidents’ Athletic Conference game at the Buzz Ridl Gymnasium Saturday afternoon.
Senior Amirah Moore and junior Danielle Parker, a Canon-McMillan graduate, each had 14 points to lead W&J, which improves to 3-0 in the PAC and 6-0 overall.
Mia Woytovich also scored 13 points for the Presidents.
Westminster (0-3, 1-4) was paced by Kayla Bennett’s 10 points, the only Titan to finish in double figures.
California 61, Bloomsburg 38: Senior forward Shatara Parsons scored 27 points and grabbed 13 rebounds as No. 4 California rebounded from its first loss of the season to defeat Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference opponent Bloomsburg, 61-38.
Parsons, who eclipsed 1,000 points in her collegiate career in the win, was the only player on either team to score in double figures.
The Vulcans, who were trying to rebound from a 93-75 loss to Ohio Dominican Wednesday, pulled away in the third quarter by outscoring Bloomsburg 18-7.
Cal (3-0, 6-1) shot nearly 43 percent from the field and made 10-of-11 free throws.
Leah Myers led Bloomsburg (0-3, 3-5) with seven points.
Saint Vincent 79, Waynesburg 65: Addy Knetzer scored 25 points but it wasn’t enough as Waynesburg fell to on the road at Saint Vincent 79-65 in a PAC contest.
Knetzer, a Chartiers-Houston graduate, also pulled down five rebounds and made seven free-throws.
Waynesburg (1-1, 3-3) was outscored 21-6 in the second quarter.
Saint Vincent (2-1, 3-3) was led by Kayla Slovenec’s 17 points. Freshman Carlee Kilgus, a South Fayette graduate, finished with 10 points.
Men’s Results
California 94, Bloomsburg 79: California had four players score in double figures, led by Jahmere Howze’s 24 points as it defeated Bloomsburg 94-79 in a PSAC game Saturday afternoon.
Isaiah Lewis scored 21 points, Cordell Smith had 18 and Terry Davis Jr. finished with 17 to help pace the Vulcans balanced attack.
Robel Teckle also had 10 points for Cal (2-1, 5-2)
Bloomsburg (0-3, 4-3) couldn’t find another primary scorer outside of Christian Mortellite. The redshirt senior guard made six three-pointers and finished with a game-high 31 points.
Westminster 85, Washington & Jefferson 56: Austin Armwood scored 19 points in 29 minutes to lead Westminster to an easy 85-56 victory over Washington & Jefferson in a PAC game.
Armwood also got help from Cameron Kane-Johnson, who finished with 14 points for Westminster (2-0, 6-1).
The defensive struggles in the second half continued for W&J (0-2, 1-5) as it surrendered 49 points. In the Presidents’ previous game against Saint Vincent, they took a 31-31 tie to the locker room before being outscored 46-31 in the second half.
Freshman Mitch Dezort led W&J with eight points.
Saint Vincent 69, Waynesburg 52: Shemar Bennett scored 11 points and grabbed seven rebounds as Saint Vincent built a first-half lead to down PAC opponent Waynesburg, 69-52.
In the Yellow Jackets first road PAC game, they couldn’t find the bottom of the hoop. Waynesburg only shot 25 percent from the field and only making 58 percent (18-31) of its free-throw attempts.
Jon Knab and Matt Popeck each scored 10 points for Waynesburg (1-1, 1-4).
Saint Vincent (2-1, 5-1) took a 43-20 lead into halftime.
