Boys basketball roundup: Free throws pay for Burgettstown; McIntire scores 1,000th

Ryan Lounder and Dante Gianfrancesco sank 7 of 8 free throws to seal an 80-73 victory over Charleroi in the McGuffey Tip-Off Tournament Friday night.

Lounder scored 19 points and Gianfrancesco added 10 points, 4 assists and 3 steals for Burgettstown. Jarred John had 17 points and 8 rebounds and Garrett Dhans scored 11 points.

Caleb Carson of Charleroi led all scorers with 24 points. Cam Carter scored 12 points and Joe Caruso 10.

Laurel Highlands 67, Waynesburg 56: Senior guard Darton McIntire scored half of Waynesburg’s points but the Raiders fell to Laurel Highlands 67-56 in the Fayette County Coaches Tournament at Penn State Fayette.

McIntire, who finished with 28 points, eclipsed the 1,000-point mark late in the first quarter as Waynesburg held a 29-28 lead at halftime.

Laurel Highlands then outscored the Raiders by six points in the final two quarters, 16-10 in the third and 23-17 in the fourth, led by a game-high 38 points from St. Francis recruit Bryce Laskey.

Malik Ramsey also reached double-digits with 14 points for the Mustangs.

McGuffey 57, Chartiers-Houston 50: Trent Belleville had a double-double to help McGuffey down Chartiers-Houston in the McGuffey Tip-Off Tournament.

Belleville scored 25 points and pulled down 15 rebounds. C.J. Cole added 14 points.

Cam Hanley led the Bucs with 21 points and Zach Southern chipped in with 11.

McGuffey plays Burgettstown at 8 tonight and Chartiers-Houston takes on Charleroi at 6 p.m.

Carmichaels 57, Avella 35: Al Cree and Dylan Wilson combined for 25 points and Carmichaels opened its season with a 57-35 victory over Avella in a nonsection game on the Mikes’ home court.

Carmichaels played solid defense as Avella scored more than half of its points during the fourth quarter, after the Mikes had forged a 40-16 lead.

Matt Craig led Avella with 12 points.

Peters Township 52, Thomas Jefferson 35: Matt Stuck and Conor Pederson combined for 27 points and Peters Township used a strong first half to defeat Thomas Jefferson 52-35 in the first round of the Peters Township/Baldwin tournament.

Stuckled PT with a game-high 14 points and Pederson followed with 13. Stuck and Pederson each scored nine points in the first half when the Indians forged a 32-15 lead.

Dan Beadner and Spencer Everly each scored seven points for TJ.

Peters Township will play West Allegheny at 4:30 p.m. today.

California 61, Geibel Catholic 42: California held Geibel Catholic to 13 first-half points and the Trojans crusied to a 61-42 victory in the opening round fo the Gators’ season-opening tournament.

California will play Jefferson-Morgan for the championship at 7;30 p.m. tonight.

The Trojans raced to a 12-4 lead after one quarter and increased the advantage to 29-9 by halftime.

Cochise Ryan and Dru Miller combined for 37 points to lead the Trojans’ attack. Ryan led the way with 19 points and Miller had 18.

Geibel’s Cole Kendall scored a game-high 21 points.

Franklin Regional 67, Belle Vernon 55: Four players for Franklin Regional scored in double figures as it raced out to an early lead and defeated Belle Vernon 67-55 in the Hempfield Tournament.

The Panthers quickly jumped on Belle Vernon, outscoring the Leopards 20-8 in the first quarter.

Hunter Stonecheck and Nathan Leopold led the Panthers each with 17 points.

Dom Bartolacci had 14, while Nick Leopold scored 10.

Belle Vernon was paced by Joe Sabolek’s 20 points. Bryce Washington had 11 points for the Leopards.

Jefferson-Morgan 73, Mapletown 40: D.L. Garrett scored 24 points and Devin Stoneking had 23 as Jefferson-Morgan defeated Mapletown 73-40 in the Geibel Catholic Tournament.

Jaylyn Torres also had 11 points for the Rockets, who outscored Mapletown in each of the four quarters. Richard Cacurak led the Maples with 13 points.

Bentworth 55, West Greene 27: Sam Schoedel led all scorers with 16 points as Bentworth defeated West Greene 55-27 in a non-section game.

The Bearcats, who also had Steven Harner and Ray Logan score 15 and 10 points, respectively, took a 34-12 lead into halftime.

Joey Reed scored a team-high 12 points for West Greene.

Elizabeth Forward 63, Beth-Center 44: Twins Gavin and Garin Martik combined to score 34 points as Elizabeth Forward defeated Beth-Center 63-44 in the Brownsville Tournament.

Gavin Martik finished with 23 points, while Garin Martik had 11 to help the balanced attack from the Warriors.

Elizabeth Forward was led by Will Greijack’s 24 points.

Beth-Center relied on senior guard Andrew White, who led the Bulldogs with 19 points.

Junior J.J. Green had 12 points for Beth-Center.

Upper St. Clair 95, Monessen 56: Kyle Meinert led a balanced scoring attack and Upper St. Clair roared out early to take a 95-56 victory from Monessen in the Upper St. Clair Tournament.

Meinert scored 20, Brett Moore 14 and Quientin Nelson 11 for USC, which led 31-8 after one quarter.

Lyndon Henderson led the Greyhounds with 14 points. Elijiahwa Payne added 12 and Vaughn Taylor 11.
