Girls basketball roundup: Trinity edges C-M for tournament title
Junior guard Alayna Cappelli scored 20 points and Trinity used some clutch free-throw shooting in the second half to held off Canon-McMillan 60-53 Saturday afternoon in the championship game of the Hillers’ tournament.
Trinity (2-0) led 17-12 after one quarter and 33-22 at halftime. The Hillers protected the advantage by making 17 of 27 free throws including nine of 13 in the fourth quarter. Canon-McMillan had closed to within 43-39 after three quarters.
Sophomore Marlaina Bozek had a strong game with 18 points for the Hillers and Riley DeRubbo had 12. DeRubbo was 10 of 13 at the free-throw line.
Tamara Mathis led Canon-McMillan (1-1) with 22 points and Izzy Allen followed with 17.
Upper St. Clair 66, South Fayette 60, OT:
Kate Groninger scored 19 points and Upper St. Clair erased a fourth-quarter deficit to defeat South Fayette 66-60 in overtime in the championship game of the Lions’ tournament.
Olivia McClelland had 15 points and Lindsay Meyer 11 for USC.
South Fayette was sled by Maura Castelluci with a game-high 21 points that included five three-pointers. Jordyn Caputo had 17 points and nine rebounds, and Skylar Aitken 14 points.
Carmichaels 44, Monessen 40:
Kristina Aeschbacher and Kylie Sinn combined for 28 points and Carmichaels held off Monessen 44-40 in the consolation round of the Charleroi tournament.
Aeschbacher led the Mikes (1-1) with 15 points and Sinn contributed 13 as Carmichaels was bale to forge a 37-29 lead after three quarters and hold off the Greyhounds down the stretch.
Natalia Holmes scored a game-high 16 points for Monessen (0-2.).
California 52, Aliquippa 36:
California won its first game of the season, 52-36 over Aliquippa, in the consolation round of the South Side Beaver tournament.
The Trojans outscored Aliquippa 35-20 over the middle two quarters, using a big game from Bailey Vig, who finished with a game-high 19 points. Vig was named to the all-tournament team.
Grace Roberts scored 11 points and Love Porter 10 for the Trojans.
Belle Vernon 46, McKeesport 42:
Lindsay Steeber scored 14 points and Belle Vernon used some torrid free-throw shooting to hold off McKeesport 46-42 in the Tigers’ tournament.
Belle Vernon (1-1) led 38-30 after three quarters and did enough at the stripe to secure the victory. The Leopards were 16 of 20 at thre free-throw line, which helped offset a game-high 18 points by McKeesport’s Jahla Bray.
Peters Township 54, West Allegheny 49: Peters Township scored all fourth quarter points on free throws to secure a 54-49 win over West Allegheny in the Peters Township/Baldwin Tipoff Tournament.
The Indians (2-0) made 10 of 14 attempts and were 21 of 27 for the game.
Makenna Marisa scored 27 points and Isabella Mills 13.
Hanna Lindemuth led West Allegheny (1-1) with 11 points.
Jefferson-Morgan 33, First Baptist 29: A 14-7 run in the third quarter pushed Jefferson-Morgan past First Baptist, 33-29, in the Northgate/Sto-Rox Tipoff Tournament.
Katey Wolfe scored 13 points for J-M (1-1) and Krista McCartney chipped in with 11.
Michaella Roth tossed in 17 for First Baptist (0-2).
Burgettstown 72, Avella 32:
Hannah Abott scored 18 points and made five three-pointers as Burgettstown rolled to a 72-32 victory over Avella in the championship game of the Eagles’ season-opening tournament.
Burgettstown was sparked by two big quarters as the Blue Devils led 19-6 after one quarter and outscored Avella 23-9 in the third to forge a commanding 58-26 advantage. Burgettstown made nine three-pointers in the game.
Elle Havelka scored 13 points and Malia Castellino had 11.
Avella (1-1) was led by Jordan Rush, who contributed 10 points.
Franklin Regional 70, McGuffey 17: Isi Palome scored 19 points to lead Franklin Regional to a 70-17 win over McGuffey in the consolation game of the Grensburg Salem Tournament.
Emily Durila led McGuffey (0-2) with 7 points.
Fort Cherry 42, Northgate 38: McKenzie Faure scored 10 points to lead Fort Cherry past Northgate, 42-38, in the Sto-Rox/Northgate Tipoff Tournament.
Abby Cooper had 10 assists for FC (2-0).
Tori Oberst scored 15 for Northgate (1-1).
Chartiers-Houston 57, Moon 29: Alexa Williamson and Keira Walker each had double-doubles to power Chartiers-Houston to a 57-29 win over Moon in the consolation of the Trinity Tournament.
Williamson had 25 points and 12 rebounds and Walker 12 points and 12 rebounds. Madison Shipman added 10.
Mapletown 59, Bentworth 37: Four player hit double figures to help Mapletown to a 59-37 win over Bentworth in the consolation of the Avella game.
Kayla Smith had 16 points, Abby Antill 13, and Taylor Vanata 10. Kelsi Smith had 10 ponts and 10 rebounds for Mapletown (1-1).
Hailey Kellerman scored 12 for Bentworth (0-2).
Burgettstown 72, Avella 32: Hannah Abbott scored 15 points on 5 three-pointers to lead Burgettstwon to a 72-32 win over Avella in the finals of the Avella Tournament.
Elle Havelka added 13 points and Malia Castellino 11 for BHS (2-0).
Jordan Rush scored 10 points for Avella (1-1).
