Small college basketball: Waynesburg men hold off Thiel; W&J women stay undefeated
Matt Popeck scored 10 of his 13 points in the second half and Waynesburg had just enough offense down the stretch to hold off visiting Thiel 56-53 in a Presidents’ Athletic Conference game Saturday afternoon.
The win pulled Waynesburg even in the conference at 2-2 and 2-5 overall.
Thiel (1-2, 3-4) led 21-19 at halftime and by as many as eight points early in the second half. but Waynesburg took the lead for good at 47-46 on a layup by Popeck with 6:22 remaining.
Waynesburg, which was only 5 of 14 at the free-throw line – all in the second half – was able to push its lead to eight points with three minutes remaining. Thiel shot only 26 percent from the field.
Jon Knab scored 11 points for Waynesburg. Thiel was led by Nyric Gosley with 17 points.
Grove City 71, Wash & Jeff 66: A late blocked three-pointer followed by Grove City free throws ended the Washington & Jefferson’s comeback as the Wolverine held on for a 71-66 victory in a PAC game at Henry Memorial Center.
W&J’s Sean Stinelli scored a game-high 18 points. Brian Graytok followed with 13 points and freshman Nicholas Campalong tallied 12 points.
Grove City (2-2, 6-2) led 68-59 with 1:48 left but W&J answered with a 7-0 run to cut the gap to 68-66 with 34 seconds remaining.
Cory Huff led four Grove City players in double figures with 17 points.
Shippensburg 84, California 59: California was held a season-low output in an 84-59 loss at Shippensburg in a PSAC crossover game.
Shippensburg’s Dustin Sleva, the PSAC East Division Player of the Year last season, posted a double-double with 25 points and 13 points. Justin McCarthur scored 18 points and John Castello 15 points on 7-of-11 shooting to go with nine rebounds.
Shippensburg improved to 4-1 in the conference and 7-2 overall. Cal lost back-to-back games for the first time all season and dropped to 2-3 in the PSAC and 5-4 overall.
Jahmere Howze scored 21 points to lead Cal. Isaiah Lewis followed with 14 points.
Shippensburg took control of the game early, building a 44-21 halftime lead.
Women’s results
Wash & Jeff 78, Grove City 57: Washington & Jefferson held visiting Grove City to six third-quarter points and pulled away in the second half to defeat the Wolverines 78-57 and remain undefeated.
W&J improved to 4-0 in the PAC and 8-0 overall. The Presidents led by only 42-37 at halftime but outscored Grove City 21-6 in the the third quarter.
Danielle Parker made 11 of 14 shots to lead W&J with a game-high 25 points. Parker also pulled in seven rebounds, all coming on the offensive end. She also tallied three assists, two blocks and two steals.
Grove City is 1-3 in the PAC and 3-5 overall.
California 65, Shippensburg 56: Junior Mia Cushon scored a season-high 24 points and senior Shatara Parsons had a double-double as California, ranked No. 11 in NCAA Division II, won at Shippensburg 65-56 in a PSAC game.
Cushon made 11 of 16 shots and grabbed nine rebounds for the Vulcans (5-0, 8-1). Parsons had 12 points, 10 rebounds and six steals.
Senior Kristin McGeough led three players in double-figures with 13 points for Shippensburg (0-5, 1-9).
Waynesburg 83, Thiel 61: Addy Knetzer had a double-double of 21 points and 11 rebounds as Waynesburg won its second straight, 83-61 over Thiel, in a PAC game.
Waynesburg (3-1, 5-3) dominated from start to finish, building a 23-8 lead after one quarter and 40-25 at halftime. The Yellow Jackets shot 46 percent from the field made 10 three-pointers.
Mackenna Drazich followed Kentzer with 17 points and Anna Bartman came off the bench to score 11. Julie Deklaven had eight assists.
Thiel (2-2, 3-4) lost despite a 30-point performance by Jess Vormelker.
