Isaiah Lewis scored 24 points and all five California University starters scored in double figures as the Vulcans defeated host Salem 95-88 in a nonconference game Tuesday night.

It is the second win of the season for Cal (6-5) over Salem. When the Vulcans pulled out a 97-88 victory over Salem (4-8) last month, the teams combined for 31 three-pointers, including 16 by the Tigers.

This time, Cal held Salem to eight three-pointers and used its balanced scoring to get a road win.

Cal, which made 13 three-pointers, received 19 points from Terry Davis, 15 from Jahmere Howze, 14 from Robel Teckle and 13 from Cordell Smith. The rest of the Vulcans combined for 10 points.

Salem’s Ignacio Rodriguez, who scored 23 points and made seven three-pointers in the first meeting, was held to only three points. Malik Toppin had a huge game for the Tigers, scoring a game-high 35 points on 17-of-20 shooting.

Cal led by as many as 17 points before Salem pulled to within 87-85 with 1:08 remaining. A layup by Smith and two Teckle free throws gave Cal a four-point lead and the Vulcans sealed the win with free throws in the closing seconds.

Waynesburg 80, Hilbert 74: Senior forward Jon Knab scored a game-high 27 points, including a go-ahead three-pointer with 3:09 remaining, and Waynesburg held off Hilbert 80-74 in a nonconference game at Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse.

Knab made five three-pointers, none more important than the one that broke a tie and gave Waynesburg (3-5) a 73-70 lead. It triggered a pivotal 10-4 run by the Yellow Jackets to close the game.

Kendall Paige had only three points for Waynesburg but they came in the final 1:39 and included a key layup that gave the Yellow Jackets a 77-72 lead.

The game was close throughout as neither team led by more than six points.

Knab made 10 of 16 shots, including five of eight from three-point range, and had six steals. Matt Popeck, with 10 points, was the only other Waynesburg player to score in double figures.

Hilbert (6-4) had four players in double figures, led by Masia Phillips’ 19 points.

Women’s results

Marietta 86, Wash & Jeff 71: Washington & Jefferson had its best start to a season in program history come to an end with an 86-71 loss at No. 21-ranked Marietta in nonconference action.

The loss snaps W&J’s eight-game winning streak to open the season. Marietta, also off to its best start in school history, improves to 9-0.

Two big runs by Marietta hurt the Presidents, who were outscored 17-5 during a seven-plus minute stretch of the second quarter and 14-2 to open the fourth period.

Three W&J players scored in double figures, led by Danielle Parker’s game-high 17 points. She also grabbed eight rebounds. Amirah Moore scored 15 points to go with four assists and four rebounds. Mya Gordon finished with 10 points, on 5-of-7 shooting, with four rebounds.

The Presidents shot 51 percent but made only 3 of 15 from three-point range. Marietta held a 41-27 advantage in rebounds and converted 19 turnovers into 28 points. The Pioneers also went to the free-throw line 20 more times than W&J, making 24 of 36.

Laura Pullins led three Marietta players in double figures with 13 points.

California 57, West Virginia State 51: It took one quarter for California to get started but the Vulcans got rolling behind the scoring of Shatara Parsons and defeated West Virginia State 57-51 in a nonconference game at the Convocation Center.

California improved its record to 10-1, remained undefeated at home and extended its winning streak to five games. None of that came easily as West Virginia State (3-8) led 17-3 after the first quarter.

Parsons, however, got her offense going in the second quarter as she scored 14 first-half points and the Vulcans pulled to within 27-22 at halftime. Cal led 41-40 after three quarters but fell behind by four points early in the fourth quarter.

West Virginia State still led, 51-49, with 2:55 remaining but Cal closed the game on an 8-2 run that included a go-ahead jumper by Bianca Jasper with 1:58 left. Jasper sealed the win with two free throws with 23 seconds to play.

Parsons had a double-double with 26 points and 12 rebounds. She was the lone Cal player to score in double figures. Gina Vallecorsa scored nine points and made a key basket in the closing minutes.

Jasmine Davis led West Virginia State with 19 points and Aurreshae Hines had 16.

Carnegie Mellon 81, Waynesburg 72, OT: Katharine Higgins scored 10 of her game-high 25 points in overtime as Carnegie Mellon held off visiting Waynesburg 81-72 in a nonconference game.

Waynesburg (5-4) erased a five-point deficit in the final two minutes of regulation to force overtime but the Yellow Jackets couldn’t overcome their own struggles at the free-throw line, where they made only 12 of 26 attempts.

CMU (7-2) led 62-57 with 2:15 left in regulation before Waynesburg used baskets by Rachel Eng and Monica Starre and two free throws by Mackenna Drazich, the latter with 46 seconds remaining, to take a one-point lead. Higgins made one of two free throws with 15 seconds left to force overtime tied at 63-63.

Drazich led Waynesburg with 18 points and five assists. Addy Knetzer had a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds, and Starre scored 10 points.
