Williamson has historic night as C-H hammers Burgettstown
Half-court defense has been the calling card for the Chartiers-Houston girls’ basketball team.
That stifling defense usually leads to offense, especially from senior forward Alexa Williamson.
Williamson set the school’s single-game scoring record with 40 points as Chartiers-Houston defeated Burgettstown 67-17 in a Section 1-AA game Thursday night at Chartiers-Houston High School.
“She had 28 points at the half, so we let her play a little bit longer then we normally would,” C-H head coach Laura Montecalvo said. “She got to the rim and finished really well tonight.”
Williamson’s previous high was 35 points, which she scored in last year’s PIAA Class 2A playoff game against Bellwood-Antis.
Chartiers-Houston (3-0, 4-1) has held three of its last four opponents under 30 points, displaying a defensive focus that helped the Bucs win a WPIAL championship a season ago.
“We’ve continued to make improvements since game one,” Montecalvo said. “We are rotating better, creating more turnovers and gelling to play our defensive principles. We are becoming more comfortable in our spots and with our responsibilities.
Jules Vulcano also took advantage of her open looks for Chartiers-Houston, finishing with 10 points.
Burgettstown (1-2, 3-3) started the season winning three of its first four games.
The Blue Devils have dropped their past two games, however, by a combined score of 135-33.
