CALIFORNIA – Chartiers-Houston remained unbeaten in Section 2-AA boys basketball with a 71-59 win at California Friday night.
Cam Hanley scored 31 points to pace the Bucs (2-0, 5-1).
“He is a guy who you don’t run plays for as he just goes and creates opportunities,” Chartiers-Houston coach Eugene Briggs said of Hanley. “California played more aggressive that we did the whole first half. We were effortless and they were busting tail. They played with their five perimeter guys and we didn’t adjust well, but we did a little better defensively in the second half.”
California co-head coach Lou Pasquale, whose team played without its two tallest starters, was happy with the fast-paced first quarter that ended with the teams tied 19-19.
“The plan was to play fast and we did in the first quarter,” he said. “We played decent today but had a few key turnovers at the wrong time.
“Having the short bench didn’t help, but we have to play better all-around, and if LeBron James can work on his all-around game, so can the California Trojans.”
Hanley scored eight points in the opening quarter for the Bucs while Cochise Ryan paced the Trojans (4-3, 1-2) with seven points.
The Bucs tightened down defensively in the second quarter, and by the time Ryan hit a three-pointer for California’s first points of the quarter with 3:56 to play in the half, Chartiers-Houston had gone on a 10-0 run to open a 29-19 lead.
The cold shooting that slowed California (1-2, 4-3) in the second quarter also plagued them in the third and fourth quarters as well.
In the third quarter, California did not score until the 4:54 mark, and it did not score in the fourth quarter until 4:51 was left in the game.
The Trojans made runs late in each quarter, but they got no closer than four points in the second half.
The Bucs closed the first half on a 7-0 run to take a 37-29 lead at the half, and they opened the second half with a 6-0 run and had an 8-0 advantage to begin the fourth quarter.
Had Hanley not been cold at the foul line, where he went 0-for-7 in the first half and 4-for-13 for the game, he might have had a 40-point game.
Andrew Clark (13 points) and Zach Southern (11) also scored in double figures for Chartiers-Houston. Ben Wilson (17), Ryan (13), Dru Miller (11) and Austin Gaillo (10) each hit double figures for the Trojans.
