Girls basketball roundup: Chartiers-Houston gets late start but wins in Orlando
A delayed flight and an changed game time didn’t have a negative impact on Chartiers-Houston as it defeated Hagerty, Fla., 63-41 in the Rock Holiday Classic in Orlando, Fla., Wednesday night.
Alexa Williamson led the Bucs with 31 points, while Jules Vulcano scored 12 and Keaira Walker finished with 10.
Megan Reilly scored 26 points for Hagerty.
Chartiers-Houston (5-1) will play nationally-ranked Hoover (Alabama) today at noon.
The game against Hagerty was originally scheduled for Wednesday morning, but because C-H didn’t arrive in Florida until only a few hours before the start time, tournament organizers moved it to 9:30 p.m. to give the Bucs time to rest before tipoff.
Peters Township 49, Warwick 36: Olivia Ziegler scored a career-high 18 points as Peters Township bounced back from its first loss of the season with a 49-36 victory over Warwick in the consolation game of the Warriors’ tournament.
Ziegler, a senior small forward, has scored in double figures for three consecutive games and helped PT (8-1) take control of the game early, building a 30-16 halftime lead.
Ziegler, who was named to the all-tournament team, led three PT players in double figures. Isabella Mills continued her steady play with 13 points and Lillian Young contributed 11.
Warwick (2-8), a team that does not have a senior on its roster, was led by Reagan Longridge’s nine points.
Trinity 51, Pine-Richland 37: Trinity broke open a close game in the second half and pulled away for a 51-37 victory over Pine-Richland in the opening round of the eight-team North Allegheny tournament.
Trinity (7-1) increased its winning streak to five games and will play in the 2:30 p.m. semifinal game today against either Norwin or Abington.
The Hillers led 21-19 but outscored Pine-Richland (1-4) 13-6 in the third and secured the victory with a 17-point fourth quarter that included two big three-point baskets by Alayna Cappelli. Trinity also made seven of eight free throws in the fourth quarter.
Riley DeRubbo led the Hillers with a game-high 19 points. Cappelli finished with 12.
South Fayette 65, Mohawk 50: Maddie Gutierrez led three South Fayette players in double figures by scoring 15 points and leading the Lions to a 65-50 victory over Mohawk in the opening round of the Bethel Park tournament.
South Fayette (3-3) will play in the championship game at 7:30 p.m. tonight.
The Lions took control of the game in the first half and held a comfortable 34-17 lead at intermission. Jordyn Caputo scored 14 points and Sam Kosmacki 12 for South Fayette.
Mohawk’s record slipped to 3-3.
Carlynton 37, Burgettstown 31: Jada Lee and Jaelyn Melko combined for 31 points and Carlynton held off a second-half charge by Burgettstown to edge the Blue Devils 37-31 in the McGuffey tournament.
Carlynton (2-5) forged a 25-18 lead at halftime but Burgettstown (3-4) pulled to within 29-28 after three quarters. The Blue Devils, however, were limited to three fourth-quarter points.
Lee paced Carlynton with 20 points and Melko had 11.
Malia Castellino’s 13 points led Burgettstown.
Carmichaels 44, Jefferson-Morgan 34: Kylie Sinn and Jayden Barnish each scored in double figures as Carmichaels pulled away over the second and third quarters to defeat Jefferson-Morgan 44-34 in the opening game of the Lady Trojans Holiday Classic at California.
Carmichaels (3-5) outscored the Rockets 23-12 in the middle quarters.
Sinn finished with a game-high 12 points and Barnish had 10.
Katie Wolfe scored 11 points for Jefferson-Morgan (1-7).
West Greene 59, Mapletown 33: Kaitlyn Rizor, Madison Lampe and McKenna Lampe each had 11 points as West Greene defeated Mapletown 59-33 in the Bentworth tournament.
The 11 points for the three Pioneers were a game high, as West Greene raced out to a 29-11 halftime lead.
West Greene (7-0) then outscored Mapletown by nine points, 17-8, in the third quarter to take a commanding lead.
Mapletown (1-6) was paced by 10 points from Abby Antill. Kayla Smith also had 10 rebounds for the Maples.
West Greene will play Bentworth in the championship game at 6:30 p.m. tonight.
Fort Cherry 40, McGuffey 23: Abby Cooper led all scorers with 15 points as Fort Cherry defeated tournament host McGuffey, 40-23.
The Rangers doubled up McGuffey in the second and third quarters, outscoring the Highlanders 16-8 to build its lead.
McKenzie Faure also scored in double digits for Fort Cherry (6-1) with 10 points.
McGuffey (2-6) was led by Abby Donnelly’s eight points.
Charleroi 70, Monessen 10: Kaitlyn Riley scored a game-high 23 points as Charleroi defeated Monessen 70-10 in the Lady Trojans Holiday Classic.
Bella Skobel and Maria Claybaugh also scored in double figures for Charleroi (6-1) with 12 and 10 points, respectively. Claybaugh also finished with six assists.
Zakavia Hairston scored five points for Monessen (1-6).
Bentworth 46, Propel Andrew Street 16: Jenna Vito scored 11 points and Bentworth moved into the championship game of its own tournament with a 46-16 victory over Propel Andrew Street.
Bentworth took control of the game early leading 13-4 after one quarter and 27-5 at halftime.
Haley Kellerman scored 10 points for Bentworth (2-5), which will play West Greene in the championship game at 6:30 p.m. tonight.
