Boys basketball roundup: Quick start nets Carmichaels Lions Club tournament title

Carmichaels erupted for 45 points in the first half and cruised to a 74-44 victory over Beth-Center Thursday in the championship game of the Carmichaels Lions Club tournament.

Four players scored in double figures for the Mikes (6-2), who led 45-12 at halftime. Jacob Lowry led the way with 18 points, Nick Mundell chipped in with 16 points, Matt Barrish scored 14 points and Dylan Wilson 13 points. Barrish was 12-for-12 from the free throw line and the Mikes were 18-for-21.

Beth-Center was led by Andrew White’s 20 points.

Burgettstown 74, Avella 30: Burgetstown outscored Avella 33-2 in the second quarter on the way to a 74-30 victory in the Avella Christmas Tournament.

Garrett Dhans and Max Shaw each scored 14 points for the Blue Devils (5-2). Ryan Lounder and Cole Shergi each chipped in with 13 points.

Owen English led Avella, which lost its sixth straight game, with 6 points.

Vincentian 66, Monessen 60: It had to be Tim Tyree’s most satisfying victory.

Tyree, the head coach at Vincentian, chalked up a 66-60 victory over his alma mater and former coach, Joe Salvino,, in the consolation game of the New Castle Christmas Tournament.

Zach McDonough scored a game-high 32 points and Alexis Griggs added 13 for Vincentian (4-3). The game turned when Vincentian outscored Monessen, 28-16, over the middle two quarters.

Lyndon Henderson scored 19 points, Cory Fleming 15 and Dishon Howell 10 for the Greyhounds (2-5). Despite the struggles of the second quarter, Monessen got to within two, 59-57, before Vincentian pulled away.

McGuffey 54, Carlynton 38: Trent Belleville’s double-double powered McGuffey to a 54-38 rout of Carlynton in the Avella Christmas Tournament.

Belleville scored 20 points and pulled down 19 rebounds for the Highlanders (7-1), which pulled away in the fourth quarter, 17-8, thanks to going 11 of 14 from the free throw line. McGuffey plays Avonworth at 7:30 tonight.

Ian Gallagher and Justin Dietrich each scored 9 points for Carlynton (3-5).

Charleroi 67, Southmoreland 45: Joe Caruso scored 14 points to push Charleroi to a 67-45 victory over Southmoreland in the Charleroi Christmas Tournament.

Dom Pellegrini added 10 points for the Cougars (3-6).

South Side Beaver 67, Waynesburg 59: South Side Beaver overcame a halftime deficit by holding Waynesburg to eight third-quarter points and then held on for a 67-59 victory over the Raiders in the consolation round of the Avella Stocking Stuffer tournament.

South Side (3-5) trailed 27-26 at halftime but outscored Waynesburg 18-8 in the pivotal third quarter.

Jake McDougal led three SSB players in double figures with 25 points. Logan English scored nine of 13 points in the fourth quarter, when the Rams made 12 of 16 free throws. Brandon Barber also scored 13 points.

Waynesburg’s Darton McIntire scored a game-high 33 points that included five three-pointers. Lucas Garber had 18 points including 11 in the first half.

Waynesburg (1-7) will play in the seventh-place game at 1:30 p.m. today.

California 64, Jefferson-Morgan 33: California built a 30-point first-half lead and crusied to a 64-33 victory over Jefferson-Morgan in the consolation game of the Bentworth tournament.

The win moved California back above the .500 mark at 5-4. The Trojans led 24-10 after one quarter and 45-15 at halftime.

Ben Wilson scored a game-high 27 points for Cal. The Trojans also had Colin Phillips, with 14 points, and Dru Millert, with 10, score in double figures.

DL Garrett was the leading scorer for Jefferson-Morgan (4-5) with 18 points.

Geibel Catholic 66, Mapletown 37: Cole Kendall scored a game-high 25 points and Geibel Catholic defeated Mapletown 66-37 in the consolation game of the Carmichaels Lions Club tournament.

Geibel improved its record to 2-6 with both wins coming over Mapletown (0-8).

The Maples trailed by only 26-22 at halftime but Geibel used a 24-8 advantage in the third quarter to break open the game.

Richie Cacurak led Mapletown in scoring with 10 points.

Avonworth 55, Fort Cherry 51: Fort Cherry senior forward Ryhan Culberson scored 32 points, including the 1,000th of his career, but the Rangers were edged by Avonworth, 55-51, in the semifinals of the Avella tournament.

Culberson also had nine rebounds and five steals. Fort Cherry (4-4) will play in the tournament’s third-place game at 5:30 p.m. today.

South Allegheny 60, Bentworth 50: Derek Lockhart had a game-high 20 points as South Allegheny knocked off Bentworth, 60-50, in the finals of the Bentworth Christmas Tournament.

Antonio Epps added 17 points and Austin Matczak 12 for SA (8-3).

Steven Harner paced Bentworth (4-3) with 15 points. Levi Jordan and Ray Logan had 10 apiece.
