Small college basketball roundup: Waynesburg wins tournament on Knab’s buzzer-beater

Tournament Most Valuable Player Jon Knab made a step-back 30-foot jump shot as time expired to give Waynesburg a 62-59 victory over Wright State-Lake in the championship game of the Purple and Gold Tournament Saturday night in Defiance, Ohio.

Knab’s shot came after Wright State tied the score at 59-59 on its final possession. Waynesburg then worked for the game’s last shot and Knab had to take a desperation jumper from between the circles as the buzzer sounded.

Matt Popeck led a balanced Waynesburg offense with 12 points. Knab and Frank Bozicevic each scored 11. Popeck joined Knab on the all-tournament team.

Jalen Huff was the leasing scorer for Wright State (6-10) with 12 points. Jordan Gorman and Isaac Clay had 10 each. The Lakers had their four-game winning streak end.

The game was close through and tied 31-31 at halftime. The Yellow Jackets held Wright State to 30 percent shooting.

Edinboro 87, California 63: Edinboro Keshan Liggans had game-highs of 32 points and 15 rebounds as Edinboro cruised to an 87-63 victory over host california in a PSAC West Division game at the Convocation Center.

The win keeps Edinboro (5-1, 8-2) in first place in the PSAC’s West Division. The Fighting Scots are a half-game ahead of Indiana.

Liggans and Jaymon Mason, who scored 19 points, combined for seven of Edinboro’s 11 three-point field goals. The Fighting Scots broke the game open with a 27-12 run that covered parts of each half and opened a 61-38 lead.

Mason scored 19 points and Anthonby Coleman had 11 for Edinboro, which has won four in a row.

California fell to 2-4 in the PSAC and 6-6 overall. The VUlcans were held to 39 percent shooting and were only 7 of 19 from the free-throw line.

Isaiah Lewis led Cal with 20 points, Luka Andjusic had 14 and Terry Davis Jr. 13.

Alfred 82, Wash & Jeff 78: Nick Simpson scored 20 points and made five of Alfred’s 11 three-point field goals as the Saxons edged Washington & Jefferson 82-78 in the consolation game of the Bill Sudeck Holiday Tournament in Cleveland.

W&J (1-10) used an 11-2 run to build a 19-10 lead midway through the first half before Alfred responded with an 11-2 spurt, sparked by three of Schmidt’s three-pointers, to tie the score.

Alfred closed the first half on a 16-9 run to take a 42-33 lead. The Saxons maintained a lead throughout the second half, though W&J closed to within 74-71 with less than four minutes remaining.

The Presidents had four players score in double figures with Brian Lindquist leading the way with 19 points. Sean Stinelli followed with 14 points, and Sven Zepic and Jonathan DeVito each had 11. The Presidents shot 50 percent and made 11 three-pointers.

Women’s results

California 74, Edinboro 71: Shatara Parsons scored 18 points, including a tiebreaking layup with 3:12 remaining, and California University went on to a 74-71 victory over Edinboro in a battle of ranked NCAA Division II teams.

Parsons’ layup gave 10th-ranked Cal (6-0 PSAC West, 11-1) a 68-66 lead and sent 12th-ranked Edinboro (5-1, 9-1) to its first loss of the season. The Vulcans have won six in a row.

The win gives Cal a half-game lead over Indiana (5-0, 10-0) in the PSAC’s West Division. Indiana’s game Saturday at Gannon was postponed.

The game wasn’t decided until Edinboro’s Ayana Vaughn missed a three-pointer with sevens seconds remaining and the Fighting Scots, after grabbing the offensive rebound, committed a turnover with two seconds left.

Edinboro couldn’t overcome 21 turnovers, though the Fighting Scots shot 51 percent.

Parsons had seven rebounds and four blocked shots to go with her 18 points. She converted a three-point play with 50 seconds to play, giving the Vulcans a 74-70 lead.

D.J. Hahn had a big game for Cal with 18 points, which included three three-point fieldf goals. Abbey Sporio had 10 points and five steals.

Ciara Rosten scored a game-high 22 points for Edinboro before fouling out. Jontay Walton had 18 points and Michaela Barnes 13.

Wash & Jeff 77, Notre Dame (Md.) 29: Maria Lawhorne scored 13 points as Washington & Jefferson rolled past overmatched Notre Dame (Md.) 77-29 at the Music City Classic hosted by Travecca Nazarene.

The Presidents (10-1) led from start to finish and put nine players into the scoring column, led by Lawhorne, who just missed a double-double, finishing with nine rebounds. Taley Dunaway scored 12 points and Danielle Parker had 10 for the Presidents, who led 39-13 at halftime.

Notre Dame (3-6) shot only 19 percent from the field, made one of 13 three-point attempts and were only 8-for-25 at the free-throw line.

Waynesburg 64, Frostburg State 61: The five three-pointers Makenna Drazich made earlier in the game helped Waynesburg build a lead.

But after a Frostburg State second-half comeback, the most important three-pointer Drazich made came as time expired because it gave Waynesburg a 64-61 road victory over the Bobcats.

Tied at 61-61 with seconds remaining, Drazich caught and immediately released the inbound pass from Rachel Eng for the game-winner, giving Waynesburg (7-4) its fourth victory in five games.

The senior guard from Avella led the Yellow Jacket with 21 points. Addy Knetzer, a Chartiers-Houston graduate, finished with 14 points by making seven of her 12 shots.

Frostburg, which trailed 38-24 at halftime, tied the score at 59-59 with 34 seconds remaining on a pair of free throws by Victoria Diggs.
