Monessen wins on Altomore’s basket

Jaden Altomore scored 35 points, the final two coming on a game-winning basket as time expired, as Monessen rallied to defeat Southmoreland 74-73 in a non-section game Wednesday night on the Greyhounds’ home court.

Southmoreland (15-4) led by seven points after one quarter and 57-53 after three quarters. The Scotties still led, 73-72, with eight seconds remaining when Southmoreland’s Zac Leighty missed the front end of a one-and-one. Monessen’s Lyndon Henderson grabbed the rebound and raced upcourt. His three-point field goal bounced off the rim and Altomore snagged the rebound. His shot from 10 feet beat the buzzer and went through the rim to give the Greyhounds (12-6) the thrilling victory.

Justice Rice scored 17 points and Henderson finished with 10 for the winners. Tommy Pisula scored 30 points for Southmoreland and 6-11 Brandon Stone followed with 24 points.

Geibel Catholic 86, Jefferson-Morgan 83: Geibel Catholic’s Cole Kendall and Enzo Fetsko combined for 61 points as the Gators outlasted host Jefferson-Morgan 86-83 in a nonsection game.

Kendall scored 31 points and Fetkso had 30 as the Gators overcame 25 points and seven three-point field goals by J-M’s Gage Clark. Jaylin Torres also scored 25 for the Rockets (4-13), who made 11 three-pointers but hurt their cause at the free-throw line, where they converted only seven of 19 attempts. Geibel was 25-for-32 at the free-throw line.

DL Garrett scored 15 points for J-M.

California 62, Carmichaels 28: Kass Taylor scored 18 points to lead California to a 62-28 Section 2-AA win over Carmichaels.

Johnny DeFranco added 11 points for the Trojans (7-3, 15-3), who led 36-9 at the half.

Jacob Lowry scored 14 points for the Mikes (0-9, 6-13).\

Belle Vernon 76, Mt. Pleasant 46: Derek Thomas and Griffin LaCarte scored 14 points each to lead Belle Vernon to a 76-46 non-section win over Mt. Pleasant.

Belle Vernon (14-4) led just 31-26 at the half, but went on a 23-8 run in the third quarter.

Joe Sabolek scored 12 points for the Leopards.

Keith Kalp had 22 points for Mt. Pleasant (4-15).

Girls result

California 47, Carmichaels 27: Love Porter led three California players in double figures and the playoff-bound Trojans used a good second quarter to defeat host Carmichaels 47-27 in Section 3-AA.

California (9-3, 17-3) outscored Carmichaels 12-2 in the second quarter to forge a 20-10 lead. The Trojans then pulled away in the second half. Jenna Miller scored 12 points for the Trojans and Bailey Vig followed with 10.

Kristian Aeschbacher, with 10 points, was the leading scorer for Carmichaels (3-9, 7-13).
