Waynesburg wins opener, falls to Franklin Regional
WAYNESBURG – Waynesburg grabbed an early 9-3 lead on Franklin Regional, but it would be short-lived as the fifth-seeded Panthers stormed to a 38-20 win over the host Raiders in the quarterfinals of the WPIAL Class AAA Team Wrestling Tournament Wednesday night.
Waynesburg got a pin from Colin McCracken and a 3-2 decision from Connor Main at 195 and 220 pounds, respectively, but the Panthers dominated the match from there, getting a technical fall from Mason Speers and pins from Zach McCann, Spencer Lee and Dan Cantraguerro to knock off the fourth-seeded Raiders.
In addition to the pin by McCracken, the Raiders got a technical fall from Kyle Homet at 170 pounds.
The Raiders defeated Butler, 41-29, in the opening round of the tournament to reach the quarterfinals.
McCracken recorded a technical fall, while McCottie Denjen, Caleb Morris and Challen Spitznogle had pins to beat the Tornados.
Kiski 69, Trinity 6: Top-seed Kiski cruised to a 69-6 victory over Trinity in the first round of the Class AAA Team Tournament.
Trinity, which won at Albert Gallatin in a preliminary round match Monday night, won only one bout against powerful Kiski. Donte Cecchine delivered a pin of Nick Delp in 5:23 at 152 pounds for the Hillers’ lone points of the match.
In other matches: In Class AA, Burgettstown beat Keystone Oaks in the first round, 54-24, before losing to top-seeded Burrell, 56-6. Also at Burrell, Fort Cherry lost to the Bucs, 69-6, in the first round. At Freedom, Valley defeated Bentworth, 52-30, in the opening round.
