Washington wraps up Section 4 title

Matt Popeck scored 22 points and Washington overcame a slow start to beat Burgettstown, 59-43, and clinch sole possession of first place in Section 4-AAA.

Jacob Swartz added 12 points and Isaiah Robinson had 10 for the Prexies (11-0, 16-3), who trailed 15-13 after one quarter.

Garrett Dhans had 12 points and Cole LaRocka 11 for Burgettstown (4-6, 9-10).

Canon-McMillan 69, Connellsville 53: Britton Beachy scored nine of his 22 points in a 23-9 run to open the game as Canon-McMillan clinched a playoff spot in Section 3-6A with a 69-53 win over Connellsville.

Carson Miller added 14 points, Kenyon Lewis 11 and Drew Fowlkes 10 for the Big Macs (7-3, 15-5), who were playing without leading scorer RJ Bell.

Seth Younkin scored 14 points to lead Connellsville (2-9, 7-12).

West Greene 72, Mapletown 11: Kolton Rush scored 27 points and West Greene shut out Mapletown in the first quarter en route to a 72-11 playoff-clinching win in Section 2-A.

Nathan Brudnock had 10 points and Craig Weaver 12 for the Pioneers (4-4, 11-6), who led 46-4 at the half.

Mapletown falls to 0-9 and 0-20.

Upper St. Clair 70, Peters Township 52: Gabe Huoy’s 28 points and 18 rebounds helped Upper St. Clair put a damper on Peters Township’s playoff hopes in Section 2-6A with a 70-52 win over the Indians.

Kyle Meinert added 18 points for USC (5-5, 12-7), which pulled into a tie for fourth place in the section with the Indians (5-5, 12-7) with the win.

Michael Cortese had 16 points and Matt Thelk 15 for the Indians.

Monessen 111, Geibel Catholic 36: Jaden Altomore’s 29 points helped Monessen sprint past Geibel Catholic, 111-36, clinching at least a tie for the Section 2-A title.

Justice Rice added 21 points, 10 rebounds and six assists for the Greyhounds (9-0, 13-6), who also got 12 points each from Jaron Youngblood and Lyndon Henderson and 11 from Elijawa Payne. Monessen hosts second-place Clairton Tuesday with the outright section title on the line.

Cole Kendall led Geibel (2-7, 6-14) with 10 points.

Trinity 61, Thomas Jefferson 52: Dylan Kern hit two three-point field goals and Joey Koroly scored nine of his team-high 18 points in the pivotal third quarter as Trinity downed Thomas Jefferson, 61-52, in a section 1-5A game.

Dylan Kern had five three-point field goals for his 15 points and Jaden Nelson added 12 for the hillers (7-3, 11-8), who outscored TJ (5-6, 10-9) in the third quarter, 20-5.

Justin Farrell had a game-high 28 points for the Jaguars (5-6, 10-9), who were held to 19 second half points.

Fort Cherry 88, Jefferson-Morgan 67: Devon Brown scored 33 points to lead Fort Cherry past Jefferson-Morgan, 88-67, in a Section 2-AA game.

Ryhan Culberson poured in 25 and Chad Colussy chipped in with 14 for the Rangers (9-2, 14-5), who led 42-32 at halftime.

D.L. Garrett scored 21 points, Jalen Torres added 20 and Gage Clark 13 for the Rockets (1-8, 4-14).

Chartiers-Houston 80, Frazier 53: A.J. Myers and Cam Hanley combined for 47 points and had double doubles to send Chartiers-Houston to an 80-53 win over Frazier in a Section 2-AA game.

Myers tossed in 26 and grabbed 16 rebounds and Hanley had 21 points and 17 rebounds for the Bucs (10-0, 15-4), who led 34-22 at halftime. Zach Southern scored 15 and Andrew Clark 14.

Justin Novak led Frazier (3-6, 4-16) with 23 points. Chris Massey added 13.

California 62, Beth-Center 38: Kass Taylor scored a career-high 33 points to help California defeat Beth-Center, 62-38, in a non-section game.

California led wire to wire while raising its record to 16-3. Nick Pryor led the Bulldogs (5-13) with 11 points and Brennan Stanley added 10.

Bentworth 72, Carmichaels 54: Stephen Harner scored 17 of his career-high 31 points in the third quarter to propel Bentworth to a 72-54 victory over Carmichaels in a Section 2-AA game.

Bentworth (5-6, 10-10) clinched the fourth and final playoff spot in the section. Levi Jordan scored 15 points.

Jacob Lowry had a team-high 22 points and Cody Brown 11 for the Mikes (0-10, 6-14).

McKeesport 75, Ringgold 57: Terron Taylor and Raquan Elliott combined for 48 points in McKeesport’s 75-57 win over Ringgold in Section 1 of Class 5-A.

Elliott led the way with 25 points and Taylor added 23 for McKeesport (10-1, 14-3).

Dakota Browning led the Rams (4-6, 9-11) with 23 points. Anthony Pampena had 12 points and Jaden Taylor 10. Ringgold trailed by three at halftime but was outscored, 44-23, in the second half.

Clairton 72, Avella 35: Karon Boyd scored 13 points as Clairton defeated Avella, 72-35, in a Section 2-A game.

Dom Sullivan added 12 points for Clairton (8-1, 14-4).

Shawn Williard had 15 points and Garrett Geresti 12 for Avella (3-6, 5-14), which clinched a playoff berth with Geibel’s loss at Monessen Friday night.

South Fayette stopped Waynesburg, 80-41 in Section 3-AAAA; Charleroi knocked off Brownsville, 63-57, to wrap up a playoff berth in Section 4-AAA..

Girls basketball

Avella 52, Clairton 35: Grace Lengauer’s 15 points led Avella to a 52-35 non-section win over Clairton in a high school girls basketball game.

Baylie Lis added 13 points for the Eagles (10-10).

Clairton falls to 7-14.
