Girls basketball roundup: Win boosts Wash High’s playoff chances

Torri Finley scored 14 points as Washington won a critical Section 3-AAA girls basketball game, 43-37 over Shenango, Saturday afternoon

The win moves the Prexies (6-7, 10-10) into a tie for fourth place in the section with Shenango (6-7, 8-12) with each team having one game remaining in their section schedule. The top four teams in each section advance to the playoffs. Washington is at third-place Burgettstown Thursday while Shenango hosts second-place OLSH.

Carly Allen scored 13 points for the Prexies and Jahlea Oakley had 11.

Jacqui Baker scored 19 points and Madison Harden had 10 for Shenango.

Norwin 68, Canon-McMillan 49: Abigail Gabauer scored 22 points and made four of Norwin’s nine three-point field goals as the Knights used a big second half to defeat visiting Canon-McMillan 68-49 in a nonsection game.

Norwin (14-5) led 25-21 at halftime, then scored 43 second-half points. Danielle McMaster scored 18 points and Taylor Ingel had 11 for Norwin.

Canon-McMillan’s Izzy Allen matched Gabauer for game-scoring honors with 22 points, which included five three-pointers. Cheyenne Trest followed with 16 points for the Big Macs (8-11).

Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic 48, Peters Township 38: Sam Breen scored 20 of her game-high 30 points in the second half, including 10 in the pivotal fourth quarter, as Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic defeated visiting Peters Township 48-38 in a nonsection game.

Peters Township (12-6) led 19-18 at halftime before North Catholic (18-2) took a 32-30 lead after three quarters. Breen then scored 10 of the Trojans’ 16 fourth-quarter points.

Makenna Marisa led Peters Township with 14 points and was the lone Indians player to score in double figures.
