Washington girls clinch playoff spot with win at Burgettstown

Sophomore Carly Allen scored 25 points and had 10 steals as Washington locked up the final playoff spot in Section 1-AA with a 64-61 win at Burgettstown Thursday night.

The Prexies (7-7, 11-10) entered the game tied with Shenango for fourth place in the section, two games behind third-place Burgettstown (8-6, 15-7).

Washington trailed 36-32 at the half, but tied the game at 47 entering the fourth quarter. Their 64 points were a season-high.

Tamia Russell added 12 points and 11 rebounds for Washington, while Haylea Ellis and Torri Finley chipped in 11 each.

Kacie Prasko had 18 points, while Emily Prasko added 14 and Darian Transue 11 for Burgettstown.

Elizabeth Forward 69, Belle Vernon 56: Brianna Spirnak scored 23 points as Elizabeth Forward held on to beat Belle Vernon, 69-56, in a Section 3-AAAA game.

The loss, coupled with Mt. Pleasant’s 49-41 overtime win at Southmoreland, knocked the Leopards (7-7, 12-10) out of the playoffs.

Alexis Korenoski had 18 points and Julia Jenkins 13 for EF (9-5, 12-10).

Caitlyn Trombley scored 22 points and Ashley Russell had 10 for Elizabeth Forward.

Chartiers-Houston 55, Fort Cherry 11: Alexa Williamson scored 22 points and Chartiers-Houston limited Fort Cherry to three field goals in a 55-11 Section 2-AA victory.

Jala Walker added 17 points for the Bucs (14-0, 20-2), who led 37-4 at the half.

Shannon Relihan scored seven points to lead Fort Cherry (5-9, 9-11).

Peters Township 61, Canon-McMillan 45: Lilian Young had 17 points and Alyssa Konopka scored 13 of her 15 points in the first half as host Peters Township defeated Canon-McMillan 61-45 in a matchup of playoff-bound teams in Class 6-A Section 3.

The big first half by Konopka, who made three of PT’s five three-point field goals, helped the Indians forge a 33-19 halftime lead. Young scored 10 of her points in the first half. Makenna Marisa also scored in double figures for the Indians (8-2, 13-6) as she tallied 13 points.

Peters Township finished in second place in the section, one game behind first-place Mt. Lebanon.

Canon-McMillan was led by Cheyenne Trest’s 15 points. The Big Macs finished 4-6 in the section and are 8-13 overall.

Charleroi 60, McGuffey 34: Juniors Kaitlyn Riley and Sierra Short combined for 31 points and playoff-bound Charleroi pulled away in the second quarter and went on to a 60-34 victory over visiting McGuffey in Section 2-AAA.

Charleroi (9-2, 16-4), which will finish in the second place in the section, outscored McGuffey 18-4 in the second quarter to take a 26-12 lead. The Cougars stretched the lead to 43-21 after three quarters.

Riley led Charleroi’s balanced attack with 16 points and Short followed with 15. Adrianna Gottheld also finished in double figures as she scored 12 points.

Mikalah Maxwell scored 14 points and Danielle Fischer 12 for McGuffey (2-10, 3-17).

Serra Catholic 45, Carmichaels 27: Gigi Mele-Madigan scored 17 points and Serra catholic won its fourth consecutive road game, 45-27, over Carmichaels in Section 3-AA.

Serra (7-7, 12-9) led by 23-17 at halftime and held Carmichaels (3-11, 7-15) to only 10 second-half points.

Rylan German scored 11 points for the Eagles. Carmichaels was led by Kristian Aeschbacher, who scored nine points.

Beth-Center 63, Bentworth 17: Kinlee Whited scored 15 of her 17 points in the first three quarters and playoff-bound Beth-Center cruised to a 63-17 victory over host Bentworth in Section 3-AA.

Beth-Center (9-5, 12-8) led 18-2 after one quarter and 31-6 at halftime. The Bulldogs received 13 points from Olivia Greco.
