Cold start dooms California against OLSH
CANONSBURG – Fifth-seeded California shot just 24 percent, losing 49-39 loss to No. 4 seeded OLSH in a WPIAL Class A high school girls quarterfinals game Thursday night.
OLSH (18-5) advances to the semifinals where it will take on top-seeded Chartiers-Houston Monday.
After the Trojans took a 3-2 lead on a layup from Love Porter, the Chargers scored the next 18 points as as California (20-4) went nearly a full eight minutes without scoring.
Ashley Norling scored nine of her 15 points during the big first-half run while Haley Hamilton chipped in eight off her 13.
California made just 3 of 21 shots in the first half as they went to the locker room down 25-7.
“You can’t play just a half of basketball in the playoffs,” California head coach Chris Minerd said. “We were too tentative. We didn’t get any rebounds. We didn’t work the ball inside. You just can’t dig that type of hole in the playoffs.”
The Trojans opened the third quarter on a 19-9 run to cut the OLSH lead to 34-26. Jenna Miller, who went scoreless in the first half, scored 10 third quarter points to get the Trojans back in the game.
Miller led California with 12 points.
That was as close as the Trojans would get.
Bailey Vig and Porter also finished in double figures for California with 11 and 10 points apiece.
“Our weaknesses all season were exposed and that’s our depth and size,” Minerd said. “We came out in the second half and played better. It took us a while to play like we were supposed to be here. We played hard. We just didn’t have enough.”
