W&J and Waynesburg lose in PAC semifinals
CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky. – Susie Ellis scored 25 points as third-seeded Saint Vincent knocked Washington & Jefferson out of the Presidents’ Athletic Conference women’s basketball tournament with a 74-68 semifinal victory Friday night at Thomas More.
Jasmine Weems added 12 points and eight rebounds for Saint Vincent (18-9), which advances to face top-seeded Thomas More in today’s championship game.
The game was tied at 15 after one quarter before the Bearcats, who had just five turnovers, went on a 26-17 run in the second quarter to take control of the game.
Canon-McMillan graduate Danielle Parker had 13 points and 11 rebounds for W&J (16-10), while Taylor Cortazzo added 12 points. Fort Cherry graduate Rachel Bellhy had nine points and nine rebounds in the losing effort.
Thomas More 71, Waynesburg 43: Top-seeded and second-ranked Thomas More held Waynesburg to 11 first-half points, building a 40-11 lead, as the Saints defeated the Yellow Jackets, 71-43, in the PAC semifinals.
Madison Temple, named the PAC Player of the Year earlier in the night, scored 16 points, grabbed seven rebounds and have five assists for Thomas More (26-0), which never trailed in the game despite shootin 36 percent against a pesky Waynesburg (16-11) defense.
Nikki Kiernan added 14 points and Emily Schultz had 10 for Thomas More.
Chartiers-Houston graduate Addy Knetzer had 17 points and 18 rebounds for Waynesburg, which also got 11 points from Katie Gehlmann.
