Cal wins PSAC West title; Glenn scores 2,000th point
CALIFORNIA – Playing in her final regular-season game at the Convocation Center, California University senior point guard Miki Glenn scored a game-high 29 points, including the 2,000th of her career, and led a second-half comeback as the California University women’s basketball team won the PSAC West Division title outright with an 80-64 victory over Indiana Saturday afternoon.
California (20-2, 26-2), ranked No. 3 in NCAA Division II, bounced back from a loss Wednesday night at Mercyhurst to win the division by two games over IUP (18-4, 20-6). Both teams are headed to the PSAC tournament that begins this week. California has a bye into the quarterfinals and will host either Edinboro or Seton Hill Wednesday night.
IUP was trying to earn a share of the division title and raced out to leads of 15-4 and 22-10. The Crimson Hawks led 38-24 at halftime.
Glenn sparked California’s comeback as the Vulcans outscored IUP 34-12 in the third quarter. The Vulcans scored 56 second-half points.
Cal put together a pair of 8-0 runs, with Glenn scoring six points in each, to close to within 41-38. Another 8-0 spurt by California gave the Vulcans a 48-44 advantage. Cal took the lead for good at 50-48 on two free throws by Lana Doran and led 58-50 after the third quarter.
The Vulcans sealed the win with a 12-0 run late in the fourth quarter.
Cal shot 66 percent from the field in the second half and made 24 of 32 free throws in the game compared to IUP’s 6-for-6 at the line.
In addition to her 29 points, Glenn had six assists. Seairra Barrett scored 19 points and had five steals for California, Shatara Parson had 12 points and a game-high 10 rebounds and Doran had 10 points.
Carolyn Appleby led IUP with 18 points.
Men’s result
Indiana 77, California 72: Jacabo Diaz led four Indiana players in double figures with 21 points and the PSAC West Division champion Crimson Hawks held off a late surge by California to beat the Vulcans, 77-72.
IUP (21-1, 26-2), which is ranked No. 2 in NCAA Division II, led 45-28 early in the second half before California mounted a charge and used a 7-0 run to close to within 60-54 after a layup by Daniel Sapp with 5:32 remaining. IUP, however, scored the next eight points, but Cal made one final push and closed to within 72-68 when Luka Andjusic made a three-pointer with 58 seconds to play.
Nick Miller came off the bench to lead California in scoring with 17 points. Andjusic and Robel Teckle each scored 11 points and Cordell Smith had 10.
