SARASOTA, Fla. – Adam Jones and Manny Machado homered as the Baltimore Orioles defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates, 8-3, in a spring training game Sunday.

Jones’ homer came in the first inning off Pirates’ starter Jameson Taillon. Taillon allowed three hits and two runs, both earned in two innings for Pittsburgh.

Highly-touted prospect Tyler Glasnow relieved Taillon in the third and threw two scoreless innings, allowing one hit and recording six strikeouts.

“It was fun,” said Glasnow, who is competing for a spot in the Pirates’ starting rotation. “I felt good.”

Glasnow, who is MLBPipeline.com’s No. 8 prospect, went 0-2 in seven games, four of which were starts, for the Pirates in 2016.

Glasnow’s fastball registered as high as 98 miles per hour and he also used a new two-seam fastball along with a changeup, two pitches he didn’t throw in 2016.

“Six strikeouts is always good,” said Pirates manager Clint Hurdle. “As spring training plays out, hitters get sharper. I just like the fact he threw strikes.

“I’ts nice to see anybody, when they put some changes in and put the hard work in, have some success with it.”

Jared Hughes took the loss for the Pirates (2-1), allowing five runs, four of which were earned, in 1/3 of an inning as Baltimore scored five runs in the seventh to break a 3-3 tie.

Making his second appearance in right field, the Pirates’ Andrew McCutchen had a double in three at-bats.

Eric Wood and Jose Osuna had home runs for the Pirates.

Chad Kuhl is expected to start for the Pirates against Toronto today. He’ll be followed by Wade LeBlanc and minor league starters Nick Kingham and Clay Holmes. Kingham and Holmes both are coming off Tommy John surgery.
