Richmond resigns as Belle Vernon girls soccer coach
The Belle Vernon High School girls soccer program is in the market for its third head coach in as many years.
Dave Richmond turned in his resignation, citing personal reasons, and it was accepted Monday night at the Belle Vernon Area School Board meeting.
“I had surgery two months ago and still can’t drive for at least another two or three weeks,” Richmond, a 54-year old native of Haslingden, England, said of shoulder problems that affected him during the season, though he held off on surgery until after the WPIAL playoffs. “I also can’t lift anything and may have to change jobs.
“I just can’t give the girls the time that they deserve right now because of physical therapy.”
Belle Vernon athleteic director Matt Humbert appreciated Richmond’s efforts.
“Dave was a great addition to our program and led our girls to a section championship,” Humbert said. “He did a solid job preparing our girls and we wish luck in all his future endeavors.”
Belle Vernon won a share of the Section 2-AAA championship last season, finishing in a first-place tie with Mt. Pleasant. The Leopards were 10-7-2 overall and lost to Thomas Jefferson 1-0 in the first round of the WPIAL playoffs.
Hired to replace Paul Sasko who retired after the 2015 season, Richmond took over a team that only returned two starters.
The Leopards are graduating five senior starters but the cupboard is far from bare.
“There is talent there and I know they have three talented players coming up,” Richmond said. “I loved every minute working with them this past year and wish them the best.”
The position was posted internally last week and, according to Humbert, the position will be opened to the public March 8.
“Anyone interested should send their letter of interest and resume to the athletic office after March 8,” Humbert said.
