Boys basketball roundup: Charleroi’s Miceli, Wash High’s Popeck pass 1,000-point mark
Sam Miceli broke the 1,000-point barrier for his varsity career in a big way.
Miceli a 6-0, senior shooting game scored a career-high 39 points in an 82-60 win over Beth-Center in a Section 4-AAA game Tuesday night.
Miceli needed 27 points entering the game and got it with a mid-range jumper in the third quarter. He stands at 1,012 points and became the first person since Bill Wagner in 1997 to reach this milestone.
Dremar Everette had a double, 18 points and 11 rebounds for the Cougars (2-0, 4-5).
J.J. Green led Beth-Center with 24 points and Nick Pryor added 11.
Washington 82, Southmoreland 63: Washington’s Big 3 of Isaiah Robinson, Matt Popeck and Jake Swartz combined for 78 points and were too much for Southmoreland and its big center, 6-11 Brandon Stone.
Wash High broke open a close game in the fourth quarter and pulled away for a key 82-63 victory in a Section 4-AAA game on the Scotties’ home court.
The win leaves Wash High (3-0, 4-3) in sole possession of first place in the section. The Prexies led 51-50 after three quarters then outscored Southmoreland (2-1, 8-2) by a 31-13 margin in the fourth quarter to end the Scotties’ six-game winning streak.
Robinson scored a career-high 30 points, including 18 in the pivotal fourth quarter, when the Prexies’ press and drives to the basket were key. Popeck followed with 26 points and all four of Wash High’s three-pointers. Also among the 26 points was Popeck’s 1,000th career point. He now has 1,017.
Swartz also had a big game with 22 points. Isaiah Schoonmaker did not score but his work on the boards was important as he grabbed 10 rebounds.
Tommy Pisula led Southmoreland with 26 points and made 16 of 18 free throws. Stone followed with 24 points and two of the Scotties’ three three-pointers.
Fort Cherry 85, Bentworth 74: Devon Brown and Ryhan Culberson each scored 24 points and Fort Cherry extended its winning streak to six games with an 85-74 victory over visiting Bentworth in Section 2-AA.
Fort Cherry (3-0, 8-2) scored the game’s first 12 points but Bentworth (1-2, 5-4) battled back and closed to within 25-21 after one quarter. The Rangers led 41-33 at halftime and 67-60 after three quarters as the Bearcats remained within striking distance.
The Rangers put four players into double figures. In addition to the big games from Brown and Culberson, Chad Colussy poured in 17 points and Logan Higham contributed 14 points.
Bentworth also had four double-figure scorers, led by Ray Logan with 21 points and Steven Harner’s 20. Levi Jordan had 15 points and Jacob Davis 11.
West Greene 68, Geibel Catholic 53: The high-scoring duo of Craig Weaver and Kolton Rush was too much for Geibel Catholic as West Greene cruised to a 68-53 victory over the Gators in a Section 2-A game in Connellsville.
Weaver led West Greene (1-0, 5-2) with a game-high 25 points and Rush was right behind with 23 points. Nathan Brudnock, with 12 points, also was in double figures for the Pioneers, who have a key home game Friday night against Monessen.
West Greene led 15-12 after one quarter and steadily increased its advantage to as many as 24 points in the fourth quarter.
Cole Kendall (22 points) and Enzo Fetsko (20 points) paced Geibel, which is 0-1 in the section and 2-7 overall.
Trinity 75, Laurel Highlands 52: Zach Ecker had his first career double-double, 10 points and 11 rebounds, to help Trinity overcome Laurel Highlands, 75-52, in a Section 1 game in Class 5-A.
Joey Koroly led the Hillers (2-1, 5-4) with 19 points, Jaden Nelson chipped in with 16 and Jeff Ecker scored 10.
Bryce Laskey led LH (0-2, 6-4) with 16.
Chartiers-Houston 47, California 41: A.J. Myers scored 22 points to push Chartiers-Houston past Californai, 47-41, in a Section 2-AA game.
Cam Hanley had 13 for the Bucs (2-0, 7-3). Kass Taylor scored 13 to lead Cal (1-2, 8-3) and Ben Wilson added 11.
Ringgold 53, Carrick 52: Anthony Pampena tipped in his own missed shot andDakota Browning blocked a final attempt with two seconds to give Ringgold a 53-52 win over Carrick in a non-section game.
Browning finished with 14 and Pampena 13 for the Rams (1-1, 6-5).
Ernie Howard scored 14 for Carrick.
Peters Township 61, Baldwin 47: Peters Township outscored Baldwin in the final three quarters to down the Highlanders, 61-47, in a Section 2 game in Class 6-A.
Dax Ploskina led PT (3-0, 9-2) with 14 points. Conor Pederson and mike Cortese each scored 14.
Carlos Ramirez paced Baldwin (1-1, 4-1) with 14 points.
Monessen 86, Avella 38: Justice Rice scored 31 points and had seven steals as Monessen ran past Avella, 86-38, in a Section 2-A game.
Lyndon Henderson had a double-double, 18 points and 10 rebounds for the Greyhounds (1-0, 4-4). Jaden Altamore added 11 points.
Shawn Willard scored 12 and Austin Lis 10 for Avella (0-1, 1-6).
Frazier 86, Jefferson-Morgan 75: Frazier remained undefeated in Section 2-AA by winning a shootout at Jefferson-Morgan, 86-75.
Justin Novak led the Commodores (2-0, 3-5) with 31 points. Jalen Torres matched Novak for game-scoring honors as he also tossed in 31 points. Gage Clark had 23 points for the Rockets, who were within striking distance all night, trailing 37-36 at halftime and 63-54 after three quarters.
