Girls basketball roundup: Avella’s Matalik gets 400th career win
Grace Lengauer poured in 14 points to power Avella to a 35-20 victory over Monessen in a Section 2-A opener Tuesdya night.
The win gave Jim Matalik his 400th career varsity victory as the Eagles improved their record to 5-4.
Marquala Green led the Greyhounds (0-10, 0-1).
Washington 57, Aliquippa 17: Washington shut out Aliquippa in the first quarter on the way to a 57-17 victory in a Class 1-AA game.
Carly Allen scored 16 points to lead the Prexies (2-1, 4-4), who led 33-3 at halftime.
Aliquippa fell to 2-7, 1-2 in the section.
Trinity 58, Greensburg Salem 20: Trinity held Greensburg Salem to single digits in all four quarters to post a 58-20 victory in a Section 3 game in Class 5-A.
Sierra Kotchman led the Hillers (3-0, 9-1) with 16 points. Abby O’Connor scored 10.
Greensburg Salem fell to 3-6, 2-1 in the section.
Chartiers-Houston 68, Burgettstown 28: Four players scored in double figures to help Chartiers-Houston roll over Burgettstown, 68-28, in a Section 1-AA game.
Alexa Williamson led the way with 25 points for the bucs (3-0, 7-2). Jala Walker chipped in with 14, Keara Walker added 13 and Jules Vulcano 10.
Kacie Prasko and Emily Prasko each scored 10 points for the Blue Devils (1-2, 5-3).
Charleroi 73, SS Beaver 35: Juniors Maria Claybaugh and Kaitlyn Riley combined for 45 points and Charleroi remained undefeated in Section 2-AAA by thumping visiting South Side Beaver 73-35.
Riley scored a season-high 23 points and helped Charleroi (3-0, 8-2) race to a commanding 34-19 lead at halftime. Claybaugh scored a season-high 22 points and made five of Charleroi’s seven three-point field goals. The Cougars led 54-26 after three quarters.
South Side Beaver (0-2, 4-4) was led by Alexis Chiccarello, who scored 12 points. Jess Barber had 10 points.
South Park 62, Belle Vernon 59: South Park’s torrid free-throw shooting was just enough to overcome Belle Vernon’s long-range shooting.
Brittany Andrews and Maura Huwalt each scored 17 points as South Park edged the Leopards, 62-59, in a Section 3-AAAA game.
South Park (3-0, 4-4) made 22 of 25 free throws, which enabled the Eagles to hold off a second-half comeback by Belle Vernon (2-1, 6-4). The Leopards made 10 three-pointers, including six by Ashley Russell, who scored a game-high 18 points.
Kelsey Green also finished in double figures for Belle Vernon with 12 points.
Canon-McMillan 55, Upper St. Clair 35: Izzy Allen scored a career-high 22 points and Canon-McMillan held Upper St. Clair to only 10 first-half points en route to a 55-35 victory in the Class 6-A Section 3 opener on the Panthers’ home court.
Canon-McMillan (1-0, 5-4) led 27-10 at halftime and cruised to the victory. Allen led the way for C-M and was supported by Lindsay Beach, who tallied 13 points.
Cassandra Kartsonas was the leading scorer for USC (0-1, 1-8) with nine points.
West Greene 72, Jefferson-Morgan 31:McKenna Lampe scored 33 points, including five three-point field goals, and West Greene rolled to a 72-31 victory over visiting Jefferson-Morgan in the Section 2-A opener in Rogersville.
West Greene (1-0, 8-1) remained unbeaten at home. The Pioneers forged a 39-12 lead by halftime and led 51-21 after three quarters.
Kaitlyn Rizor also had a big game for West Greene with 16 points and Madison Lampe chipped in with 11.
Jamie Lawrence was the high scorer for Jefferson-Morgan (0-1, 4-7) with 11 points.
Frazier 48, Carmichaels 36: Brooke Poling scored 24 points – half of her team’s total – and the Commodores won at Carmichaels 48-36 in a Section 3-AA game.
Frazier (3-0, 6-2) won because of Poling’s big night and a 7-for-11 performance on the free-throw line. Carmichaels (0-3, 4-7) went to the free-throw line 21 times but the Mikes could convert only seven times and that stymied any comeback attempt.
Jovanna Isaac scored 10 points for Frazier. Carmichaels was led by Kristina Aeschbacher, who tossed in 14 points.
South Fayette 74, Moon 32: South Fayette won its Class 5-A Section 2 opener, rolling over Moon 74-32.
Sam Kosmacki scored 18 points and Maura Castelluci had 16 for the Lions (1-0, 5-2), who dominated from the start and led 44-16 at halftime.
Brownsville 46, McGuffey 41: Alie Seto scored a game-high 25 points to send Brownsville past McGuffey, 46-41, in a Section 2-AA game.
The win moved Brownsville to 4-7 overall, 1-2 in the section.
Mikayla Maxwell scored 21 points to lead the Highlanders (0-2, 0-8), who scored only four points in the first quarter.
Jeannette 52, Beth-Center 46: Olivia Sirnic scored 21 points to propel Jeannette past Beth-Center, 52-46, in a Section 3-AA game.
Jada Morgan added 12 for the Jayhawks (2-1, 4-3).
Olivia Greco led Beth-Center (1-2, 4-4) with 14 points. Kinlee Whited chipped in with 11.
