Girls basketball roundup: Top-ranked Class A team holds off West Greene
Gia Thorpe scored a game-high 27 points as Winchester Thurston, the top-ranked Class A team in the WPIAL, remained unbeaten with a 58-42 non-section win over West Greene in a nonsection girls basketball game Friday night.
Ayanna Townsend added 12 points and Emma Small had 10 for Winchester Thurston (11-0), which led 31-23 at the half.
McKenna Lampe led West Greene (12-3) with 22 points.
Fort Cherry 43, Avella 23: Fort Cherry used 16 points from Shannon Relihan and some solid defense to defeat host Avella 43-23 in a nonsection game on the Eagles’ home court.
Fort Cherry (7-7) won its second in a row by pulling away in the second half after leading 16-9 at halftime.
Grace Lengauer, with eight points, was the leading scorer for Avella (6-8).
Serra Catholic 71, Mapletown 36: Aaliyah Coleman scored 44 points as Serra Catholic topped Mapletown, 71-36, in a non-section game.
Coleman made eight three-pointers and Serra (7-7) led 38-27 at the half but pulled away in the third quarter with a 21-4 run.
Kayla Smith led the Maples (4-10) with 10 points, while Hannah Dusenberry had nine.
