College basketball: W&J sweeps Geneva in PAC action

Washington & Jefferson’s starters combined for 72 of the team’s 74 points as the Presidents erased a five-point halftime deficit to record a 74-66 Presidents’ Athletic Conference win Saturday at Geneva.

The Presidents closed the game on a 10-0 run, sparked by a three-point play by Sean Stinelli and another from Brian Lindquist. A pair of free throws from Jonathan DeVito all but sealed the game before Brian Graytok hit an uncontested layup near the final buzzer to set the final margin.

Lindquist led all players with 23 points, thanks to an 8 of 15 effort from the floor and 7 of 11 at the free-throw line. He was also second on the team with six rebounds. Mike Zappala scored 17 points, and Graytok and Stinelli each chipped in 15 points.

W&J held edges in points in the paint, 38-36, points off turnovers, 17-11, and second-chance points, 8-6. The Presidents also shot 59.3 percent (16 of 27) from the field in the second half.

Bethany 87, Waynesburg 71: Led by four players scoring in double figures, the Bethany Bison earned an 87-71 win over Waynesburg in a Presidents’ Athletic Conference game Saturday afternoon.

Bethany improved to 7-3 in the PAC, 12-5 overall, and is currently on a five-game winning streak. The Yellow Jackets fell to 5-12 overall, 3-7 in league play.

Senior guard Antonio Rudolph led all players with 22 points and added five rebounds. Freshman forward Chaice Truex scored 17 points and had nine rebounds, junior guard Calique Jones added 12 points and seven boards, and senior forward Javonte Trujillo chipped in with 11 points.

Waynesburg was led by Marcus Wallace, who finished with 18 points on 6-for-6 shooting from the field.

California 69, Mercyhurst 52: Cordell Smith scored 17 points to lead California past Mercyhurst in a PSAC West Division game.

Robel Teckel added 15 for the Vulcans (3-10, 6-13) and Daniel Sapp added 12.

Lorenzo Collier scored 11 for Mercyhurt (5-8, 7-10).

Wash & Jeff 86, Geneva 66: Rachel Bellhy, a Fort Cherry graduate, scored 14 points in her return to action and the Washington & Jefferson women’s basketball team snapped a three-game losing streak with an 86-66 win at Geneva in Presidents’ Athletic Conference action.

After leading by just four points at halftime, the Presidents’ offense came alive in the third quarter, outscoring the Golden Tornadoes, 28-11, to put the game out of reach

Bellhy was 7-for-10 from the floor and pulled in five rebounds in her first appearance since Dec. 3 at Saint Vincent. Taylor Cortazzo scored a career-high 26 points on 9 of 13 shooting, including a perfect 4-for-4 from three-point range.

Amirah Moore dropped in 14 points and shot 6-for-9 from the floor and pulled down six boards, dished out three assists and came away with three steals. Danielle Parker, a Canon-McMillan graduate, had a game-high 13 rebounds for her fourth double-digit rebound game of the season. Mia Woytovich of Charleroi, had eight rebounds to go with her six points, four assists and two steals.
