Cal wins, makes move for PSAC tournament spot

Look who’s suddenly in the thick of the race for a spot in the PSAC tournament.

Robel Teckle scored 13 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, and California moved into a tie for sixth place in the West Division – the final tournament spot – with a 58-52 victory over depleted Edinboro Saturday at the Convocation Center.

It was the third consecutive win for California (5-10, 7-12) and the sixth straight at home.

The Vulcans shot only 32 percent but won by grabbing 22 offensive rebounds and holding Edinboro (4-11, 6-13) to 29 percent shooting.

Cal never trailed after taking a 6-5 lead and twice led by as many as nine points in the second half, including at 53-44 with 3:25 remaining. Edinboro, which had only seven players in uniform and lost Mike Beck briefly in the second half to an ankle injury, cut Cal’s lead to 53-52 with 50 seconds to play. Teckle, however, made two free throws and Cordell Smith added three foul shots in the final 29 seconds to secure the victory.

Tony Richardson had 12 points and a team-high eight offensive rebounds for Cal. Rashawn Browne also scored 12 points.

Edinboro’s Jaymon Mason scored a game-high 18 points. Sheldon Brogdon had 13.

Grove City 68, Wash & Jeff 61: Junior center Cory Huff and freshman guard Nate Peters each went 2-for-2 at the free throw line to rally Grove City to a 68-61 victory over Washington & Jefferson in Presidents’ Athletic Conference game in the Henry Memorial Center..

The Wolverines (4-8, 8-11) trailed 35-26 at halftime but outscored W&J (1-1, 1-18) in the second half, 42-26.

The Wolverines surged ahead with 8:17 left, 49-48, when junior forward Jonathan Grim hit a short jumper in the paint.

Huff led Grove City with 19 points and 13 rebounds and Peters added 13 points and seven rebounds. Freshman guard Zane scored all 10 of his points in the second half.

Sean Stinelli scored a career high for the second-straight game, pouring in 27 points, hitting 6 of 10 from three-point range and 9 of 16 overall.

Thiel 74, Waynesburg 58: Josh Lumbus poured in 18 points and had nine rebounds to send visiting Thiel past Waynesburg, 74-58, in a Presidents’ Athletic Conference game.

Tyreik Burton scored 14 points, grabbed five rebounds and notched four steals, and Nyric Gosley chipped in with 12 points. Clandell Cetoute tossed in 10 points, had seven rebounds and six blocks..

Thiel led by just two points at halftime, 38-36, but opened a 10-point lead in the second half. Thiel led by as many as 17 points down the stretch.

Jon Knab paced the Yellow Jackets with 18 points and Timmy Kaiser scored 10 points. Brennan Smith paced Waynesburg on the glass with eight rebounds.

Wash & Jeff 69, Grove City 61: A 19-3 run at the end of the half and into the third quarter propelled Washington & Jefferson to a 69-61 victory over Grove City in Presidents’ Athletic Conference action at Henry Memorial Center.

The victory keeps Washington & Jefferson in second place in the league standings at 9-3, half a game ahead of Bethany. W&J improved to 12-7 on the season, while Grove City fell to 9-10, 5-7 in the conference.

Rachel Bellhy scored a season-high 22 points, Danielle Parker 15 and Danni Medovich 14 for the Presidents (9-3, 12-7), who outscored the Wolverines, 20-10 in the third quarter.

Lexie Arkwright led Grove City (5-7, 9-10) with 14 points.

Waynesburg 55, Thiel 47: Waynesburg rallied from a 10-point halftime deficit to earn a 55-47 victory over the visiting Thiel Tomcats in a Presidents’ Athletic Conference game.

Waynesburg trailed, 32-22, at half but held Thiel to just 15 second-half points. An 8-0 in the fourth quarter helped the Yellow Jackets pull away.

Katie Gehlmann led the Yellow Jackets with a game-high 16 points. Addy Knetzer and Monica Starre each scored nine points while recording nine rebounds.

Jess Vormelker led the Tomcats with 14 points and nine rebounds. Danyelle Lucido scored 11 points.
