Wild Things have 8 chosen for Frontier League All-Star Game
The Wild Things will be well-represented at the Frontier League All-Star Game July 12 in Joliet, Ill.
A team-record eight Washington players were voted to the East Division team and two will be starters. The eight selections breaks the team record of seven set in 2014, the last time the Wild Things made the playoffs.
First baseman Kane Swenney and left field Bralin Jackson will be starters for the East, while catcher Kyle Pollock, third baseman Mike Hill and center fielder Rashad Brown will be reserves. Three Wild Things pitchers were selected as all-stars, including starter Chase Cunningham, who was named Monday the Frontier League Pitcher of the Week. Also selected were starting pitcher Trevor Foss and reliever Zach Strecker.
Sweeney and Jackson have been the hub of the Wild Things’ offense. Sweeney is eighth in the league in hitting with a .338 batting average. He had 14 doubles, six home runs, 33 RBI and is second in the league with 37 walks. Jackson, meanwhile, is hitting .306 with 33 RBI, eight doubles and a team-high nine home runs.
Pollock is one of the top defensive catchers in the league and is batting .241 with four home runs and 22 RBI. Hill also is a defensive standout who has committed only three errors at third base. He is batting .224 with six home runs and 20 RBI. The speedy Brown is batting .286 with 11 doubles and leads the Wild Things with eight stolen bases.
Cunningham has a 6-0 record and his 2.49 ERA ranks fourth in the league. He has pitched 65 innings, which is second in the league. Cunningham was named Pitcher of the Week after leading Washington to a pair of wins. He threw eight shutout innings in the Wild Things’ 4-0 victory June 27 over Traverse City and allowed only one run over seven innings Sunday in a 4-2 win over Joliet.
Foss, the Frontier League’s Starting Pitcher of the Year in 2016, has a 6-3 record and 2.82 ERA. He is third in the league with 55 strikeouts and his 67 innings is the most thrown by any Frontier League pitcher.
Strecker is Washington’s closer. He has a 5-1 record, 1.09 ERA and 11 saves. He has pitched in a league-leading 23 games.
Jamie Bennett of the Schaumburg Boomers will be the manager for the East squad and will determine his team’s starting pitcher.
