The Washington Wild Things released second baseman Alex Fernandez and placed right-handed pitcher Mark Smyth on the retired list Sunday.

Fernandez, the son of former major league pitcher Alex Fernandez, played in 33 games for the Wild Things during the first half and hit .168 (20-for-119) with two home runs and 14 runs batted in. Fernandez struck out 42 times and walked 16 times in 137 plate appearances.

Smyth did not have a decision in nine appearances this year. Smyth tossed 15.1 innings, gave up 13 hits and nine runs (eight earned). He walked six and struck out eight and had an ERA of 4.69. The former West Liberty standout struggled of late, giving up at least a run in three straight appearances.

The Wild Things’ active roster now stands at 22 – 12 position players, 10 pitchers – as the All-Star break begins. Washington returns to action Friday at home against the Windy City ThunderBolts. First pitch is 7:05 p.m.
