Wild Things outslug Miners
The Washington Wild Things erupted for six runs over the first two innings then hung on for a 9-7 victory over the Southern Illinois Miners Wednesday in a Frontier League game.
Kane Sweeney’s two-run home run powered a four-run first for the Wild Things and two runs came in during the second inning on an error by the Miners’ second baseman.
Washington scored two in the fifth and one in the sixth to ward off a comeback attempt by the Miners, who had a three-run second and scored one each in the fourth and seventh innings. Southern Illinois cut its deficit to 9-7 with two runs in the bottom of the eighth.
Romeo Cortini went 3-for-4 with four RBI and two runs scored for Southern Illinois. Ryan Lashley had two hits and two RBI.
Sweeney went 2-for-4 with the two RBI and two runs scored; Hector Roa had two hits and two RBI; and Trevin Sonnier had a hit and two RBI, accounting for five of Washington’s 12 hits.
