Things pull away in 5th inning to defeat Southern Illinois
Washington scored four unearned runs in the fifth inning to create separation and eventually defeat Southern Illinois 10-6 in a Frontier League game Thursday night.
Leading by one run after four innings, 4-3, Hector Roa reached on an error by Miners’ third baseman Ryan Lashley. That began the merry-go-round on the base paths for the Things, scoring Roa, Bralin Jackson, Mike Hill and Kenny Peoples-Walls to extend the lead to 8-3.
Hill gave Washington an early lead with a solo home run in the second inning.
Southern Illinois then matched a three-run third inning from the Things when Nolan Earley took Cameron Stanton deep for a two-run home run.
Rashad Brown and Jackson added more insurance in the eighth inning. Brown’s fielder’s choice scored John Fidanza. Jackson then doubled home Brown to put Washington up 10-3.
Chris Washington (1-2) was given the loss for the Miners after allowing eight runs on 10 hits through five innings.
Despite giving up seven hits over five innings, Stanton (2-2) limited the damage by only surrendering three runs to earn the win.
Washington and Southern Illinois combined for 26 hits.
