Fernandez has blast in Wild Things’ win
Alex Fernandez hit a three-run home run in top of the fourth inning to spark the Washington Wild Things to a 9-4 victory over the Florence freedom in a Frontier League game Sunday.
The win pushed the Wild Thing above the .500 mark at 14-13. Florence fell to 18-9.
Fernandez’s home run, his first of the season, brought in Rashad Brown and John Fidanza and gave Washington a 5-3 lead.
Washington would put the game out of reach by scoring three more runs in the seventh when Brailin Jackson hit his seventh home run of the season, a solo shot, Kyle Pollock walked with the bases loaded and Kenny Peoples-Walls drove in a run with a sacrifice fly.
Washington pounded out 13 hits as all but one starter had at least one. All but two players in the starting lineup drove in at least one run and scored at least one run.
Fernandez finished 2-for-4 with three runs scored and three RBI and the top five players in the Wild Things’ lineup went a combined 10-for-22.
Chase Cunningham picked up the win, improving his record to 3-0, after allowing two earned runs in six innings.
Collins Cuthrell went 2-for-4 with three RBI for Florence and leadoff hitter Daniel Fraga went 2-for-4 with two runs scored.
