Through the first four innings in the Wild Things series finale against Schaumburg, it didn’t look like Washington starting pitcher Trevor Foss was going to get much help.

Primarily cruising through those innings, only giving up two hits and one run, Foss finally got the assistance he was looking for as Mike Hill’s fifth-inning double ignited the Things as they defeated first place Schaumburg, 6-2, Sunday afternoon.

After winning two of three in the weekend series, Washington trims the Boomers lead in the East Division to 6 ½ games.

Hill, whose double brought home Kyle Pollock, scored on the following at-bat when John Fidanza doubled to give the Wild Things a 2-1 lead after five innings.

The lineup for Washington continued to roll in the sixth inning when Kane Sweeney reached on a leadoff walk, Hector Roa tripled and Kyle Pollock singled to put the Things up 4-1 before an out was recorded. Hill continued the onslaught with a two-run home run – giving him back-to-back multi-hit games – to give Washington a 6-1 lead.

Foss (5-3) earned the win after going six innings, allowing six hits and one earned run, a solo shot from Schaumburg’s Kyle Ruchim in the third inning.

The Boomers picked up another run in the eighth inning on a Ryan O’Malley single to left field off Things’ relief pitcher Davis Adkins.

Schaumburg starting pitcher Kagen Hopkins (4-2) was given the loss after giving up two runs through five innings. It’s his first loss since May 20.

Zach Strecker continued to be dependable in the closer role for Washington, picking up a four-out save after entering with two outs in the eighth inning. Strecker’s five consecutive saves, including two in the weekend series against Schaumburg, gives him nine for the season.
