Waynesburg women fall at CMU in ECAC title game

PITTSBURGH – Lisa Murphy and Makayla Filiere combined for 44 points and host Carnegie Mellon defeated Waynesburg 80-69 Sunday afternoon in the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference women’s basketball championship game at Skibo Gymnasium.

Murphy had game highs of 23 points and 15 rebounds, and Filiere scored 21 points, to help CMU pull away in the fourth quarter. The Tartans finished the season with a 21-7 record.

Waynesburg, which won three games last week to reach the tournament’s championship contest, ends its season with a 19-11 record.

Addy Knetzer led five Waynesburg players in double figures with 13 points. Haley Delaney followed with 11 points, and Kassidy O’Keefe, Katie Gehlmann and Mackenna Drazich each contributed 10 points.

The score was tied after one quarter and remained close until late in the fourth quarter. CMU led 40-37 at halftime and 56-52 after three quarters. The Tartans pushed the lead to double digits on two free throws by Murphy with less than four minutes remaining.

CMU, which made 10 three-point field goals, had a big advantage on the boards, outrebounding Waynesburg 46-32.
