Bailey, Riotto lead Peters Township
T.J. Bailey and Eric Riotto combined on a five-hitter with 10 strikeouts as Peters Township defeated Fox Chapel, 5-1, in a season opener Friday.
Bailey pitched the first four innings, and Riotto, who also doubled, threw the last three to pick up a save for the Indians (1-0). Ethan Young doubled and drove in three runs for PT.
Jacob Hughes doubled and Nick McRandal took the loss for Fox Chapel (0-1).
• Nick Serafino hit a walk-off sacrifice fly to score winning pitcher Brandson Klein in the bottom of the seventh inning to lift Canon-McMillan to a 4-3 win over Fordham Prep (N.Y.) at Myrtle Beach.
Starter Zach Rohaley struck out eight in four innings for the Big Macs (1-0). Nick Drake, who pitched the next two innings, and Klein combined with Rohaley on a two hitter with 12 strikeouts.
• Carmichaels used two hit batsmen and an error to score three runs without the benefit of a hit in the bottom of the sixth inning to beat Jefferson-Morgan, 9-6, in a non-section opener.
Joel Spishock had three hits, including two doubles, and drove in four runs for the Mikes.
Joe Headlee homered and Isaac Dean and Eli Rafail doubled for Jeff-Morgan.
Spishock and Dylan Wilson combined for four innings of scoreless relief for the Mikes.
• Trinity took advantage of four Belle Vernon errors to rally and beat the Leopards, 7-5.
The Hillers (1-0) loaded the bases in the top of the seventh on a walk, single and error, then scored two runs on a single by Logan Defilippo to break a 7-5 tie.
Only three of Trinity’s seven runs were earned.
Evan Johnston, Tim Labuda and Jordan Zilka had doubles for Belle Vernon (0-1).
• Trey Rohanna pitched three strong innings and also drove in three runs as Waynesburg opened its season with an 11-1 five-inning victory over visiting West Greene.
The Raiders scored in every inning in which they batted, building a 6-1 lead after three innings and scoring five times in the fourth.
Rohanna had a two-run single in Waynebsurg’s fourth inning. Dalton Riggenbach and Ryley Metheny each hit a double and Luke Robinson went 3-for-3. Rohanna and Riggenbach combined on a five-hitter and allowed only one unearned run.
Joey Reed had two of West Greene’s hits.
• Nate Higham did a little of everything as Fort Cherry won its opener, 9-5, over visiting Cornell.
Higham was the winning pitcher, striking out six. He also led the Rangers’ nine-hit offense by going 3-for-5 with a double, triple and three RBI. The Rangers trailed 5-3 before scoring nine times in the fourth inning.
• It took only the first day of the season for Mapletown to equal its victory total of last year.
Mapletown had a 12-hit attack and won its season opener over Clay-Battelle, 12-8, in Blacksville, W.Va.
The Maples built a 12-3 lead in the sixth inning behind the pitching of Brian Bogden, who threw five strong innings. Dylan Rush had a triple and drove in two runs for Mapeltown, and Lane Powell and Brandon Donley each doubled.
• Chartiers-Houston dropped a pair of games in Myrtle Beach, S.C., losing 12-1 to St. Thomas More and 4-1 to Montreal Conniers. No further information was provided.
• Carlynton took advantage of seven errors to beat Beth-Center, 12-2, in a five-inning game. Jake Seitz had a double and two RBI for the Cougars.
