College baseball roundup: Cal opens PSAC with sweep of Pitt-Johnstown
California opened PSAC play Friday with a doubleheader sweep at Pitt-Johnstown, 13-9 and 12-9.
Dave Marcus went 4-for-4 with a home run and two doubles, scoring four times and driving in two runs for California. Kristian Webb had three hits and drove in three runs, and Austin Logan had three RBI for the Vulcans (2-0, 6-8).
Brett Hileman had three hits, including a homer, and four RBI for UPJ (0-1, 10-11).
Cal’s Levi Krause homered and drove in four runs in the second game.
• Clint Rose and Kyle Mrozonski had RBI singles in the top of the ninth inning as Wisconsin-Stevens Point defeated Washington & Jefferson, 5-4, in Auburndale, Fla.
The two runs turned out to be big for WSP (5-7), as the Presidents (7-3) scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth on a fielder’s choice and error to make it 5-4 before Heinrich Walder got the final out on a pickoff.
Mark Merlino tripled and Nick Vento doubled for W&J, Losing potcher Riley Groves allowed only two earned runs in seven innings.
• Westminster’s Joe Salmen did not allow a hit until the bottom of the sixth inning, throwing a four-hitter as Westminster defeated Waynesburg, 2-0, in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference opener for both teams.
The Titans (1-0, 4-8) scored their runs in the first inning, one earned and one unearned, against Waynesburg (0-1, 5-7) starter Luke Carter, who allowed five hits in nine innings.
