Softball: Char-Houston wins two in Myrtle Beach

Chartiers-Houston opened the season with a pair of wins in Myrtle Beach, S.C.

The Bucs defeated WPIAL rival Burrell 8-7 in eight innings and used as five-hitter by Kaitlyn Dittrich to beat Bonner & Prendergast Catholic of Drexel Hill, 4-1.

Chartiers-Houston had an early 6-2 lead against Burrell before the latter rallied sent the game to extra innings. In the top of the eighth, Chartiers-Houston’s Kasey Scears led off with a triple and scored the gamew-inning run on a sacrifice fly by Macie Kesneck.

Winning pitcher Karlyn Bayer allowed one run in five innings of relief. Kesneck tripled and drove in three runs. Lauren Lober had a double.

Later in the day, Chartiers-Houston scored three runs in the fifth inning to beat Bonner & Prendergast.Kaci Alderson tripled and drove in two runs, and Kayla Alderson also tripled, to back Dittrich’s complete game.

• Defending WPIAL champion West Greene opened the season with 5-3 victory over University High School of Johnson City, Tenn., at the Ripken Experience in Myrtle Beach, S.C.

McKenna Lampe hit an inside-the-park home run and Madison Renner cracked a two-run blast to tie the game 3-3 after four innings. Winning pitcher Jade Renner hit a double and Madison Lampe a triple for the Pioneers.

• West Mifflin held off a seventh-inning comeback by visiting Ringgold and edged the Rams, 7-6.

Winning pitcher Annalise Modrick hit a home run and Isabella Farmer drove in three runs for the Titans, who led 7-4 entering the seventh inning. Ringgold had two quick outs to start the seventh before getting three consecutive hits, including a two-run single by Johnna Mocniak, who had a double and three RBI on the day.

• McGuffey opened its season with a pair of close losses at the Ripken Experience in Pigeon Forge, Tenn.

The Highlanders opened the day with a 4-2 loss to Station Cap (Tenn.) and dropped an 8-7 decision to Portland (Tenn.) in its second game.

Station Camp won the game by scoring four runs in top of the sixth inning to erase a 2-0 McGuffey lead. The Highlanders’s Gabby Pettit started the bottom of the sixth with a triple but she was left stranded. McGuffey’s Brin Hunter was 2-for-4.

Portland overcame a an early 6-2 deficit and won the game on a two-out, walkoff single on a 3-2 pitch.

McGuffey had 11 hits, including two triples by Ella Brookman, who was 3-for-4 with three runs. Megan Gray had three RBI, including a two-run double.

• Sara Chory homered and doubled as Mapletown bested Turkeyfoot, 15-5, in a five-inning game.

Macee Chesney added a triple and double, driving in four runs for the Maples (1-0), who also got a double from Taylor Vanata.

Remi Hostetler had a double and three RBI for Turkeyfoot (0-1).
