Status of Polanco, Stewart in jeopardy for Bucs
CLEARWATER, Fla. – Philadelphia scored five runs off Josh Lindblom in the first inning, knocking the Pirates’ starter out of the game in the second inning of a 6-3 spring training win over the Pirates Sunday.
Wade LeBlanc, Jared Hughes and A.J. Schugel combined for 5 1/3 winnings of scoreless relief after Lindblom was knocked out of the game before the Phillies (11-15) added one more run in the ninth inning.
The Pirates were playing without starting outfielder Gregory Polanco and backup catcher Chris Stewart, both of whom sat out with injuries.
Polanco is dealing with a sore left shoulder, while Stewart has groin soreness.
With the start of the regular season just one week away, there is some concern neither could be ready in time.
“We’ll see where we are. It’s early in the process in terms of how they’re feeling and how they bounce back,” Pirates general manager Neal Huntington said. “Let’s see where we are as we get closer to the middle part of the week as we have to start making some decisions.”
Meanwhile, starting catcher Francisco Cervelli, who was initially scheduled to play Sunday, did not make the trip. Huntington said Cervelli’s absence was due to his workload in Saturday’s game, the travel to Clearwater and “a little bit of soreness” in Cervelli’s right foot, which was an issue earlier this spring.
“We just want to make sure that we take care of him,” Huntington said.
