Wheatcroft shoots 70, finishes 8-under in Puerto Rico
RIO GRANDE, Puerto Rico – D.A. Points started with five straight birdies and closed with a 6-under 66 to win the Puerto Rico Open on Sunday for his third PGA Tour title.
The great start wasn’t enough for Points when he made three bogeys in a five-hole stretch around the turn. He steadied himself, protecting a one-shot lead going to the par-5 18th, and made birdie for a two-shot victory.
Washington native and Trinity High School graduate Steve Wheatcroft finished with a 2-under par 70 on Sunday. That put him at 8-under for the tournament, placing him in a tie for 49th place.
Wheatcroft played a bogey-free round on the final day, recording birdies on a pair of par-5 holes, No. 2 and No. 15.
He won $7,269.
Points won for the first time since the 2013 Houston Open. This victory does not get him into the Masters because the Puerto Rico Open is held the same week as a World Golf Championships. Even so, it gets him into the PGA Championship and The Players Championship, and gives him a two-year exemption.
Rohanna finishes 55th: After a tough start to her final round, Waynesburg High School graduate Rachel Rohanna birdied three of the final five holes she played Sunday to finish in a tie for 55th place at the IOA Championship in Beumont, Cal.
Rohanna had bogeys on four of her first six holes to fall to 5-over, then bogeyed No. 12, as well, before a birdie on No. 13 seemed to jumpstart her day.
Daniela Darquea shot a final-round 5-under to finished at 12 under for the tournament, three strokes ahead of the field.
