High school softball: Belle Vernon improves to 2-0

Mekenize Sokol and Jordan French each homered, and Baily Parschall struck out 14, as Belle Vernon won for the second time in as many games, 6-1 over Steel Valley in a nonsection game Monday.

Sokol hit a solo home run and French drove in two runs. Parschall, who threw a three-hitter, helped her cause by driving in two runs.

Steel Valley (0-1) had a triple by Kayla Hartnett and a run-scoring single by Morgan Farrah.

• Waynesburg smashed 12 hits to power its way past California 12-8 in a non-section game.

Rachel Elseheimer hit a two-run home run and Madison Johnson a solo blast for the Raiders (1-0). Sydney Hare and Bailee Shimek each had a double and Paige Rutan knocked in four runs. Bre Trusler tripled for California (0-1).
