College baseball roundup: Meyer, Bernhardt lead Waynesburg to important win
Waynesburg used a stellar pitching performance by senior Jacob Meyer to defeat visiting Bethany, 6-2, Tuesday in a pivotal Presidents’ Athletic Conference game.
The Yellow Jackets (11-10, 17-19) pulled to within one game of Grove City and Thiel, who are currently tied for third place in the conference. Waynesburg and Grove City will meet this weekend in a series that could determine who qualifies for the upcoming four-team PAC championship tournament.
Meyer pitched one of his best games as a collegiate player. He threw a nine-inning complete game, allowing six hits and one walk. He struck out six and retired the first 10 Bethany batters.
Cameron Bernhardt led Waynesburg at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a two-run homer, double and four RBI. Nathan Mori had three hits and drove in a run, and Mitch Nordstrom doubled.
Waynesburg led 5-0 in the seventh inning before Bethany (7-12, 13-20-1) was able to score.
• Fort Cherry graduate Matt Heslin pitched a complete-game shutout to lead No. 17-ranked Washington & Jefferson to a Game 2 win and doubleheader split with Mount Union in nonconference action. Mount Union won the opener, 13-7.
The Presidents are 27-8 overall while Mount Union is 28-9.
Heslin threw a four-hitter and did not issue a walk to improve his record to 3-0.
Derek Helbing and Frank Fortunato each homered in the W&J victory. Fortunato’s three-run homer in the first inning was all the offensive support Heslin required.
In the opener, Mount Union overcame a 4-1 deficit by scoring seven runs in the fourth inning. Helbing and Nick Gatins each homered for the Presidents.
