High school baseball roundup: Canon-McMillan wins section title

Canon-McMillan clinched the outright Class 6-A Section 3 championship Wednesday with a 16-1 victory over host Allderdice in five innings.

Cam Weston was the winning pitcher for the Big Macs (10-0, 11-5), who have won 10 of their last 11 games. Canon-McMillan scored the game’s first 16 runs.

Allderdice is 1-10, 1-12.

• Third baseman Jacob Callaway hit a two-run homer in the first inning and Belle Vernon overcame four error to beat host West Mifflin 6-4 in a Section 3-AAAA game.

It was the 10th consecutive win for the Leopards (10-2, 12-3), who continue to stay within striking distance of first place in the section.

Callaway’s home run was part of the Belle Vernon’s three-run top of the first inning. The Leopards were leading 4-3 in the sixth before they scored two key runs.

Jordan Zika had a double and Joshua Hoffman scored two runs for the Leopards. Starter Joel Engstrom and Jake Amatangelo combined on an eight-hitter. West Mifflin (2-9, 2-12) left 11 runners on base.

• Ethan Young and Brian Livolsi each hit a home run for Peters Township but the Indians standed too many baserunners and lost to Upper St. Clair, 6-4, in a Class 6-A Section 3 game at Peterswood Park.

USC made the most of only five hits. Losing pitcher Eric Riotto struck out seven.

• Jeddy Young threw a three-hit shutout and Western Beaver won a Section 3-A pitchers’ duel over Avella, 1-0, at Polar Star Field.

Western Beaver (5-3, 5-8) won despite a fine pitching performance by Avella’s Dalton Simonelli, who threw a four-hitter with 10 strikeouts. Simonelli issued only one walk and Young had two free passes.

The Golden Beavers scored the game’s only run in the fifth inning as Anthony Turner hit a leadoff double and scored on a two-out single by Jordan Kellher.

Garrett Geresti had two of the three hits for Avella (3-6, 5-8).

• Jason Beranek threw a four-hitter and Mt. Pleasant scored four runs in the top of the first inning to beat host Waynesburg 5-1 and tighten the Section 3-AAA race.

Mt. Pleasant (8-2, 9-5) pulled to within a half-game of first-place Waynesburg (8-1, 11-2), which had its nine-game winning streak end.

The Vikings broke a 1-1 tie in the seventh when Beranek hit a two-run single. Mt. Pleasant scored two more runs on an RBI groundout and a single by Brandon McCormick.

Joe Shrum of Mt. Pleasant had a double, the game’s only extra-base hit.

Waynesburg starting pitcher Hunter Robinson allowed three hits over 6 1/3 innings and struck out eight. Trey Rohanna had two of the Raiders’ three hits.

• Chartiers-Houston scored eight runs in the bottom of the first inning and winning pitcher Jordan Davis threw a one-hit shutout as the playoff-bound Bucs defeated Bentworth 10-0 in five-inning Section 1-AA game.

Davis allowed only a single to Jacob Maimone and two walks. He struck out 11 as Chartiers-Houston improved to 10-2 in the section and 11-4 overall.

Davis helped his cause by driving in two runs. Matt Whitfield and Destin Weiser each had two RBI. A.J. Myers and T.J. Johnston each had a double.

Bentworth (5-6, 7-9) remains in fourth place in the section.

• Winning pitcher Logan Mayhle and reliever Dylan Wilson combined on a three-hitter as Carmichaels defeated visiting Frazier 9-1 and clinched a playoff berth out of Section 1-AA.

Cody Brown went 3-for-3 and scored two runs, and Joel Spishock drove in a pair and scored twice to lead the offense for Carmichaels (9-3, 11-4). Wilson, who pitched the final two innings, had a double for the Mikes’ only extra-base hit.

• Keystone Oaks rode a six-hitter from Jerry Volpe to edge McGuffey 3-1 in Section 3-AAAA.

Volpe allowed only one unearned run and struck out five. McGuffey’s Adam Blacharczyk also threw a complete game. He allowed seven hits and struck out five.

Keystone Oaks (3-8, 3-11) did all its scoring in the fourth inning with Volpe, Sam Tortorella and Jeremy Slazinski driving in the runs with singles.

Nick Stanek had a run-scoring double that gave McGuffey (5-6, 7-9) a 1-0 lead in the second inning.

• Kevin Vaupel went 3-for-3, drove in two runs and pitched two scoreless innings of relief for a save as Section 3-AAAA leader South Park defeated Ringgold 7-1.

South Park (10-1, 15-2) leads second-place Belle Vernon by a half-game.

The Eagles broke the game open with a four-run sixth inning. Kyle Thompson threw five innings to get the win.

Ryan Varley and Bo Haines had doubles for Ringgold (7-4, 10-4).

• Blaze Tran struck out 10 to lead Jeannette past Jefferson-Morgan, 10-3, in Section 2-A. Seth Howard doubled for the Jayhawks (7-2, 9-4). Jefferson-Morgan fell to 7-1, 7-5.

• Cam Schaub doubled and knocked in two runs to propel Fort Cherry to a 9-5 victory over Burgettstown in Section 1-AA.

Fort Cherry moved to 7-9, including 4-8 in the section. Sam Huggins doubled for Burgettstown (1-10, 2-12).

• Mike Howard had a solo home run and a bases-clearing triple to power West Greene to a 13-3 five-inning victory over winless Geibel in Section 2-A.

Patrick Brady tripled for the Pioneers (3-6, 3-8).

• Winning pitcher Cody Dice drove in Lane Powell with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning, giving Mapletown an 8-7 win over Monessen in Section 2-A.

It was Dice’s third RBI of the game. Dylan Rush had two doubles and R.J. Durr one for the Maples (3-7, 4-10), who had 19 hits and left 13 runners on base.

Monessen is 5-7, including 5-4 in the section.

• California remained undefeated in Section 1-AA with a 14-2 win over Beth-Center. Yale Johnson doubled for the Bulldogs (2-10, 2-12).

Nate Luketich, Brandon Powell and Drake Johnson each had a double for the Trojans (12-0, 15-1).
