High school softball roundup: Avella walks to first win; Canon-Mac rallies to stay in first
• Brooke Burchianti was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning Wednesday to score Geanna Samol with the winning run for Avella in a 20-19 victory over Cornell in a non-section game.
Avella, which snapped a 12-game losing streak, had only four hits but got 22 walks from losing pitcher Hailey Leitner. Avella scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh with only one hit, four walks and a hit batsman.
• Kayla Hopkins scored on Lindsay Schmidt’s sacrifice fly to cap Canon-McMillan’s two-run bottom of the seventh inning as the Big Macs rallied to beat Mt. Lebanon, 5-4, and remain in first place in Class 6-A Section 1.
Mt. Lebanon (3-6, 4-6) had scored two runs in the top of the sixth inning to take a 4-3 lead. Canon-McMillan (9-1, 9-2) charged back after one out in the seventh. Eric Haught, the No. 9 hitter in the lineup, snacked a double and scored on Hopkins’ line-drive single to center field, tying the score.
A bunt single by Kylah Kubiczki put runners on first and third, and Schmidt followed with the game-winning sacrifice fly to right field.
Hopkins led off the third inning for C-M with a solo home run that gave the Big Macs a 3-1 lead. Hopkins also was the winning pitcher in relief. Schmidt had a double.
• Ally Bezjak and Annalia Paoli each homered as Albert Gallatin powered its way to a 14-3 victory over Ringgold in a six-inning Class 5-A Section 2 game.
The win was the seventh consecutive for AG (9-2, 14-3). The Colonials scored the game’s first six runs before Ringgold (6-5, 9-7) cut the gap in half in the fourth inning. But AG scored four times in the fifth and four more in the sixth.
Ringgold was held to three hits by AG pitchers Maddie Flowers and Madison Hershberger. Johnna Mocniak had a double for the Rams.
• Kayla Alderson had four hits, Kaci Alderson hit a home run and winning pitcher Kaitlyn Dittrich allowed only two unearned runs over six innings as Chartiers-Houston defeated Bentworth 15-2 in Section 3-AA.
The Bucs improved to 7-2 in the section and 13-3 overall.
Kayla Alderson was 4-for-5 with a triple, double, three runs and two RBI. Kaci Alderson was 3-for-5 with three RBI and the home run.. Jessica Ford drove in four runs Kasey Scears had three singles as the Bucs unleashed a 15-hit attack.
Dittrich allowed five hits and did not issue a walk. She struck out five.
Leah Lindley had a triple for Bentworth (5-4, 8-9).
• Mapletown kept its playoff hopes out of Section 2-A alive with a 12-0 victory in five innings at Geibel Catholic.
Winning pitcher Abby McIntire threw a two-hit shutout, striking out three, as the Maples improved to 4-7 in section and 6-11 overall. She allowed only two singles.
McIntire, Hannah Dusenberry, Rachel Hartley and Macey Chesney each had two singles for Mapletown. Dusenberry and McIntire both had a pair of RBI.
• Winning pitcher Marlaina Bozek had two doubles and two RBI to help push Trinity past McKeesport, 9-2, in Class 5-A Section 2.
Bozek struck out four and allowed one hit for the Hillers (2-8, 4-8). Cameron Meier had a three-run homer in a six-run sixth.
• Laura Walker struck out five and walked none to lead Carmichaels past Jefferson-Morgan, 4-2, in Section 2-A. Gina Ranieri tripled and Natalie McNett went 3-for-3 for the Mikes (9-1, 13-4).
Krista McCartney and Brooke Diamond each doubled for J-M (3-7, 4-9).
