Things make first roster cuts
The Frontier League had its first mandatory roster cutdown Sunday in preparation for its 25th season, which begins Friday.
All teams were required to be down to 28 players but the Wild Things took it a step further and trimmed their active roster to 25.
Washington released 11 players, placed one on the 14-day disabled list and another on the suspended list.
Released were pitchers Josh Falbe, Taylor Keinat, Turner Parry and Cole Way, catchers Alex McKeon and Bobby San Martin, first baseman-outfielder Justin Garcia, middle infielder Joey Cecere and outfielders Nick Berger, Quinnton Mack and Nathan Mikolas. Pitcher Mark Smyth was placed on the suspended list and pitcher Kolin Stanley was put on the DL.
Of those released, only McKeon was returning to Washington. He played 29 games last year before suffering a season-ending injury. Mikolas is a former third-round draft pick of the New York Yankees and Way is a 6-11 pitcher who played three years in the Kansas City Royals’ system.
Each Frontier League team must be down to 24 active players Tuesday.
Washington begins the regular season Friday in Crestwood, Ill., against Windy City and will play its home opener May 19 against the ThunderBolts.
