High school baseball roundup: Canon-Mac finishes perfect in section

Ian Hess hit a solo home run in the bottom of the sixth inning Tuesday to give Canon-McMillan a 5-4 win over Bethel Park to cap a 12-0 record in Section 3 of Class 6-A.

Nick Serafino hit a double and Cam Weston cracked two doubles for the Big Macs (13-5). Bethel Park fell to 7-5 and 11-8.

• Jaryn Addis’ single with no outs in the bottom of the seventh inning scored Colton Dellarose from third base with the winning run as Brownsville defeated Waynesburg 4-3 in a key Section 3-AAA game.

The loss drops Waynesburg (9-2, 12-3) from first place to third place in the section, a half-game behind both Mt. Pleasant (10-2, 11-5) and Brownsville (10-2, 12-3). Waynesburg has one section game remaining, the completion of a suspended game at Charleroi. The game will resume 4 p.m. today tied in the top of the ninth inning. If Waynesburg defeats Charleroi, it will create a three-way tie for first place. Ties for first place are not broken by the WPIAL.

Against Brownsville, Waynesburg erased a 3-1 deficit by scoring single runs in the fifth and sixth innings. Ryan Braun, who drove in two of Waynesburg’s runs, had an RBI single in the sixth that made it 3-3.

Waynesburg starting pitcher Hunter Robinson hit the 100-pitch mark and had to be removed from the game after six innings, per PIAA rules. He struck out nine but walked five.

Brownsville opened the seventh with consecutive singles and a walk that loaded the bases with no outs, setting up Addis’ game-winning hit.

Josh Davison was the winning pitcher with 3 1/3 innings of relief. Waynesburg was held to four hits, including a double by Luke Robinson.

• Nick Maue threw a five-inning no-hitter as Moon blanked Trinity 10-0 in Class 5-A Section 2.

Maue walked only one batter, Kyle Kelley to start the game, and struck out five.

Jake Farringer doubled, scored two runs and drove in another to lead the offense for Moon (9-3, 12-6), which scored six runs over the first two innings.

Trinity finished with a 3-9 record in section. The Hillers are 5-11 overall.

• Frazier’s Trevor Hayes pitched a three-hit shutout and Tyler Dorcon drove in four runs as the Commodores blanked Fort Cherry 10-0 in a six-inning Section 1-AA game.

Hayes struck out six and issued only one walk, and he benefitted from a pair of four-inning innings by the Commodores (5-9, 5-11).

Cameron Schaub struck out eight over 5 2/3 innings for Fort Cherry (4-10, 7-11). Jacob Baird hit a double.

• Ethan Young hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth to give Peters Township a 2-0 win over Penn Trafford in a non-section game.

The win was the 298th for head coach Joe Maize.

P.J. Dailey threw a five-hit shutout for the Indians (14-5).

• Zach Abbott hit a three-run homer and winning pitcher Mike Howard struck out 12 as West Greene rallied and beat visiting Mapletown 9-6 in Section 2-A.

Mapletown (3-9, 4-12) led 6-5 entering the bottom of the sixth, when Abott’s home run was the highlight in the Pioneers’ four-run inning.

Howard scattered seven hits and issued three walks as West Greene improved to 3-9 in section and 3-11 overall.

• Winning pitcher Steve Twardy and reliever Christian Milletary combined on a two-hitter and West Allegheny defeated visiting California 4-1 in a nonsection game at Wild Things Park, ending the Trojans’ 16-game winning streak.

West Allegheny (17-1), the Class 5-A Section 2 champion, broke a 1-1 tie in the fourth inning on an RBI single by Nick Ross, who had two of the Indians’ eight hits.

WA tacked on insurance runs in the fifth and sixth innings.

California (17-2) tied the score at 1-1 in the fourth when an error allowed Johnny DeFranco, who had singled, to score.

Nate Luketich pitched a complete game for the Trojans, the Section 1-AA champions who had not lost since March 27.

• Jordan Zilka went 3-for-3 with two RBI, and Deven Judy and jake Amatangelo combined on a five-hitter as Belle Vernon defeated Uniontown 9-2 in Section 3-AAAA.

The loss by Uniontown (5-9, 6-11) drops the Red Raiders into a three-way tie for the final playoff berth from the section with McGuffey and Elizabeth Forward. McGuffey, based on a 3-1 record in games against Uniontown and EF, wins the tiebreaker and will advance to next week’s playoffs.

Belle Vernon (12-2, 14-3) scored in each of the first five innings. Zilka, Jacob Callaway and Cole Naylor each had a double.

• Dylan Deross allowed one run and seven hits in Elizabeth Forward’s 3-1 win over Ringgold in a Section 3-AAAA game.

Nate Cole drove in a run in the two-run fifth and another in the top of the seventh for EF (5-9, 6-12). Nate Homa had two doubles and a single and wes Scott a single and double.

Chase Angotti had two hits and Koby Bubash had an RBI single for the Rams (9-5, 12-5).

• Connor Bedillion tossed a four-hitter and struck out four to lead Washington to a 4-1 win over Seton-La Salle in Section 3-AAA.

Isaiah Perry doubled for the Prexies (4-8, 6-10). Jared Capozza doubled for the Rebels (2-10, 3-10).

• Ryan Lounder drove in two runs to propel Burgettstown to a 6-3 win over Bentworth in a Section 3-AA game.

Cole LaRocka doubled for Burgettstown (2-11, 3-13). Mac Skolyak and Andy Wiltrout each had a double for Bentworth (5-9, 7-12).
