Canon-McMillan gets No. 2 seed for WPIAL baseball playoffs
Canon-McMillan, the only Class 6-A team to go undefeated in section play, was given the No. 2 seed for the upcoming WPIAL baseball playoffs that begin Tuesday with first-round games. Brackets and pairings were released Friday.
The Big Macs, who went 12-0 in Section 3 and are 13-5 overall, are one of three local teams to receive first-round byes. California (17-2), the No. 2 seed in Class AA, and Jefferson-Morgan, the No. 4 seed in Class A, also received byes. California went undefeated in section play and J-M was 11-1 en route to winning its first section title since the 1980s.
Thirteen local teams have qualified for the playoffs, with at least one in each classification except 5-A.
Canon-McMillan will not play until the quarterfinals May 22 against the winner of a first-round game between Butler (14-6) and Penn-Trafford (10-9).
Also in Class 6-A, Peters Township (14-6) plays Plum (13-6) Tuesday in a 4:30 p.m. game at Fox Chapel. Plum, which is coached by Waynesburg native Carl Vollmer, defeated Peters Township in last year’s Class AAAA quarterfinals.
In Class AAAA, Section 3 rivals Ringgold (12-5), McGuffey (7-13) and Belle Vernon (14-3) are on the same side of the bracket and will play first-round games Tuesday. Ringgold plays Freeport (12-7) at Mt. Pleasant while McGuffey faces Deer Lakes (13-5) at North Allegheny. Both games start at 4 p.m. Belle Vernon will play Quaker Valley (9-7) at Upper St. Clair’s Boyce Mayview Park at 6:30 p.m. Belle Vernon and McGuffey could meet for the third time in the quarterfinals.
Waynesburg (12-4) has a potential matchup in the quarterfinals against section rival Brownsville. Waynesburg will play South Side Beaver (9-10) in the first round Wednesday (4:30 p.m.) at Boyce Mayview Park. If the Raiders win, they will play the Brownsville-Valley winner in the quarterfinals.
Also in Class AA, Charleroi (11-6) plays Ellwood City (11-9), 7 p.m. Wednesday, at Burkett Park in Robinson Township.
Class AA first-round games are scheduled for Tuesday. Chartiers-Houston (12-5) is the No. 8 seed and will play North Catholic (11-9) at the Burkett Complex in a 4 p.m. game. If the Bucs win, they face top-seeded Serra Catholic (19-1) in the quarterfinals.
Bentworth (8-12) will play Freedom in a first-round game, 4 p.m. at Boyce Mayview Park. Carmichaels (13-4) plays its first-round game on a field that is familiar to the Mikes. Carmichaels (13-4) faces Bishop Canevin (9-6) at Beth-Center (6 p.m.). Carmichaels and Beth-Center are in the same section.
In the Class AA quarterfinals, California will play either Neshannock (14-6) or Carlynton (15-5) on May 22.
Jefferson-Morgan also will wait for the quarterfinals to make its debut. The Rockets will play May 23 against the winner of a first-round game between Sewickley Academy (10-5) and Springdale (5-9). Springdale and Jefferson-Morgan played in a nonsection game in mid-April.
Monessen (7-9) plays a first-round game in Class A Wednesday (4:30 p.m.) against Union (8-6) at Burkett Park.
