Top-seeded Blackhawk blanks Ringgold
WEXFORD – Of the 10 local high school baseball teams that played in the first round of the WPIAL playoffs, Ringgold was the only one that managed to win a game. The quarterfinals weren’t as kind to the Rams.
Blackhawk’s Jared Woodward hit a grand slam and Jon Pence threw a shutout as the Cougars blanked Ringgold 12-0 in a five-inning Class AAAA game Monday at North Allegheny High School.
Top-seeded Blackhawk (19-2) scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning and scored nine times in the fourth, when four of the runs came on the Woodward homer.
Mike Turconi hit two doubles for Blackhawk and cleanup hitter Mark Engel was 2-for-3 with a double and three RBI.
Pence struck out six and issued only one walk. Two of Ringgold’s hits came off the bat of Matt Morgan. Jake Mayer and Chase Angotti had the other hits. All were singles.
Ringgold’s season ends with a 12-6 record.
