In WPIAL Class A girls’ volleyball there were no surprises as top-seeded Bishop Canevin captured its third championship in five years, sweeping past Our Lady of the Sacred Heart, 3-0, in the finals played at Baldwin High School Saturday afternoon.

The Crusaders, who had reached the finals in seven of the last eight years, winning titles in 2013 and 2015 and finishing runner-up last season, opened the match with a 25-19 victory before facing a stiff challenge from the Chargers. In the second set, OLSH opened up a 19-10 advantage before Canevin rallied to win, 25-22. The Crusaders won the third game, 25-23.

“It was big because OLSH is a good team and has had a good program,” said Canevin coach Kevin Walters about the comeback in the second set. “We didn’t want to let them get into it and go into four games. We needed to shut them down and take care of business.”

Alexa Malloy and Kylie Airesman, who live in the Fort Cherry School District, took care of business. They led the Crusaders with 17 and 12 kills, respectively. Airesman also led in digs with 24.

“Kylie did a good job,” Walters said. “She’s a captain and one of our team’s big leaders. She plays well and brings a lot of momentum to the team.”

Maddie Maziarz, another team captain from South Fayette, led the way with 40 assists.

The Crusaders begin their quest for a state title when the PIAA tournament begins Tuesday.
