Yancich leads Trinity Hall of Fame class

Mike Yancich was one of the best two-way players in Trinity High School history.

The three-year letterman had 271 career tackles, 30 quarterback sacks and rushed for 2,133 yards.

Later this month, Yancich will be part of this year’s class of inductees for the Trinity Sports Hall of Fame.

The group includes Gerard Berty (basketball coach), Chelsea Fonner (rifle), Cortni McGinnis-Junko (basketball, track), Veryl Long (wrestling), Tyrone Wormsley (track, football), Jack Rea Jr. (contributor) and the 1986 football team.

The induction ceremony will be held at 6 p.m., Friday, Nov. 24 in the Trinity High School gymnasium. For ticket information, call 724-225-9017 or 724-745-6614.

The following is a brief look at the inductees.

Mike Yancich, football

Yancich finished his scholastic career with 27 touchdowns and a spot on the All-State first team.

At Penn State, he was a four-year letterman and team captain of the 2012 team. He played in the Rose, Outback, Capital One and TicketCities bowls.

Gerard Berty, basketball

Berty spent 12 years as a college assistant before taking the job at Trinity. In six seasons, he had a 75-65 record and his 1986-87 team went 19-6 and won the Section 5 title in Class 5A.

Chelsea Fonner, rifle

Fonner won three section championships in four varsity seasons. She was a three-time medalist in the WPIAL and PIAA and won a WPIAL and state title as a junior.

Cortni McGinnis-Junko, basketball, track

A letterwinner in basketball, volleyball and track, McGinnis-Junko scored 1,025 career points in basketball, was named MVP at the Washington-Greene County Coaches Track Meet and holds the school record in the high jump at 5-3.

Veryl Long, wrestling

One of the most successful wrestlers in PIAA history, Long had a 65-2 record and won a state title in 1956. He won two WPIAL titles, two regional gold medals and was a state runner-up in 1955.

At Iowa State, he went 95-4 and was a third-place finisher in the NCAA Division I Championship. Long won a nationall title in 1965.

Tyrone Wormsley, track, football

A running back, Wormsley set the school record for rushing yards (1,675). He also set records in the 110-meter hurdles, the 300 hurdles, the long jump and triple jump. He was a state medalist twice.

Jack Rea, contributor

Rea was a member of the 1948 WPIAL championship football team. Rea served as a volunteer trainer for all Trinity students and spent 34 years as trainer at Washington & Jefferson College.

He is a member of the Washington & Jefferson Hall of Fame and the Washington-Greene Chapter of the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame.

1986 Football team

Under head coach Bob Johnson, the Hillers went 10-2 and won the Big 10 Conference title, only the second team to win a conference title at Trinity.
