Cal men, women chalk up victories

Junior transfer Jahmere Howze had a double-double, 44 points and 20 rebounds, as the California University men’s basketball team earned a 105-94 victory Sunday against host Glenville State in the final game of Jakobi’s Journey Basketball Classic.
The Vulcans improved to 2-0, defeating a pair of Mountain East Conference opponents. Meanwhile, the Pioneers dropped to 0-2 under ninth-year head coach Stephen Dye.
Howze shot 15 of 23 from the floor and pulled down 20 rebounds (11 offensive) and had two steals. He scored more points than any Cal player in over two decades, and the 20 rebounds are the highest total in at least a decade. The single-game school record for scoring is held by Ray Greene with 51 points during the 1970-71 season against Lock Haven.
Senior Terry Davis, Jr. scored 19 points on 7 of 13 shooting from the field and grabbed eight rebounds and seven assists in a team-high 36 minutes. Senior Isaiah Lewis had 13 points, three rebounds, two assists and a team-high three steals against the Pioneers.
Senior Cordell Smith scored 11 points, had five rebounds, four assists and two steals in 35 minutes.
Cal stretched its lead to as many as 17 points, 64-47, forcing four Glenville turnovers and converting 7 of 11 from the field in the initial five minutes of the second half. The Pioneers cut the deficit to 91-86 with 6:40 left in the second half.
Sophomore Darhius Dunn finished with 32 points, four rebounds and five assists in the losing effort while playing 38 minutes.
College women
Cal 85, Notre Dame 76: Behind a career-high 32 points by senior forward Shatara Parsons, California University posted an 85-76 victory at Notre Dame (Ohio) at the Mountain East Conference-Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Crossover Challenge.
Cal is 2-0 mark. The host Falcons fell to 1-1 under first-year head coach Lauren Macer, who played at Notre Dame College from 2009-13.
Parsons led all players with 32 points after shooting 12 of 25 from the field and 8 of 11 from the free-throw line. She also collected nine rebounds (six offensive), two assists, two blocks and two steals while playing 39 minutes. Parsons scored at least 15 points in both halves and finished the season-opening event with 60 points in two games.
Junior transfer Mia Cushon recorded a double-double for a consecutive game, finishing with 21 points and 12 rebounds (six offensive). She made 8 of 16 from the floor and also posted two assists and three steals in the victory. Sophomore DJ Hahn also had 12 points and 11 rebounds for her first career double-double.
